is it possible Gerry Cooney could have had a controversial win on the scorecards? Im not sure the judges would have had the balls to score the fight in his favour because there would have been a riot.
I watched the fight again today and it's obvious to everyone watching who won the fight. The thing is Cooney did have a few eye catching moments, and a Cooney win, or even a draw would have been huge financially for a lot of people. The rematch would have been on an even bigger scale than the first fight.
Larry boxed his ears off,but yet Holmes was down on the scorecards.I think there would have to have been an investigation if Gerry would have gotten a decision.Thank God it never came to that.
ramirez got the decision over whitaker so anything is possible, so as you say with all the money involved with holmes and cooney i am sure mr king would of happily put on the rematch
The official cards were 113-111 (2x) and 115-109 for Holmes. Holmes was kicking Cooney's ass in the 13th, so barring a miraculous comeback with Cooney scoring multiple KDs, then no, Holmes wins a UD.
You beat me to it. I had just turned 5 years old when the fight happened, so I saw it on film years later. I also saw a version that has the judges commenting of why they scored each round the way they did. I think they may use that version on ESPN Classics occasionally. Anyway... No, Cooney would have lost the decision.
The 113-111 score cards were pretty bad. Coony lost a point due to a low blow, and suffered a 10-8 knockdown. Essentially those two judges felt the fight was pretty much even minus the point deductions.
Judging by the shape Cooney was in in Round 13, Holmes would have won the last 2 rounds and got the decision. Also, when the fight was stopped, Cooney was going down, so the 13th would be a 10-8 round for Holmes.
If Larry wanted to, he probably could've put Gerry down for a couple of more knockdowns to seal the deal.Larry wins the decision since Gerry had nothing much to give at that point.
I had him winning Round 1, 3, 4, and one of the middle rounds can't remember which off the top of my head. He was also winning Round 2 but lost it because of the knockdown. A few other rounds were close but it is safe to say that Cooney won 4 rounds or so. I think the 2 judges (Ford & Morreti) said they had it close because Cooney was the aggressor most of the fight. Either way even with the awful scorecards he wasn't going to win in a 15 round fight.
