Anyway, Leija was just a really solid boxer who didn't excel in any one area, but was sound enough in most categories to have moments against virtually every fighter he faced, with the exception of DLH (who was way heavier, and pretty much at his peak in that fighter).
I always felt Leija's problem was that he tried to Box in the confines of his technique, but when he fought bigger guys he did not have the punch to get their respect and the precision short punches he used to throw were not going to be enough to keep someone like DLH, Ruelas off him. Some fighters cut loose and compromise technique for aggression (Riddick Bowe)when they have to, when there is a call for that, but Leija was one of those fighters that never did that. In that sense he reminds me of Juarez, he will be conservative and stay within his technique, although Juarez has cut loose more recently.
Yeah, that's a good point, although Leija would trade at points in his later fights, especially if he was rocked. Still, he did tend to stay within his zone more often than not, and while that can be a good thing (you don't rattle as easily), it didn't bode well when he faced larger fighters, for the most part.
I cant believe that guy said he was not a technical fighter, that is exactly what he was, he was not elite but he was a decent fighter. I knew he would make Tszyu look a bit uncomfortable for a few rounds because he was quite adept at fighting from mid range and Tszyu is not comfortable fighting short, he was strictly a long range fighter imo.
Yeah, the description of Leija as a bully was way off base. If anything, Leija tended to lose because he wasn't a particularly hard puncher, and could occasionally be overpowered by stronger fighters. But he was a very very sound boxer.
Its a bit like Meldrick Taylor against Espana, too short to Box from long range and not hard hitting enough to stay inside. Outcome inevitable.
Not if you can't show your post actually has an explanation. So far you've been a total failure at doing that.
I haven't argued with any of the experts that posted in this thread. Since when were you the thread starter?
