Not sure if you could say he was better but I remember Nigel Benn was one who was dangerous when he was hurt.

 

Suppose it depends on your definition and how you see things because all fighters have to fight hurt its part of the game.

Ali fought blind, he also said he was out on his feet several times against Foreman and was obviously hurt against Frazier

Morales when hurt always fought back with fierce combinations

Nigel Benn fought 2 great comebacks against Barkley and McClellan amongst others

Holyfield comes back well in fights hes taken titanic punnishment in

Theres countless examples in the sport

I don't think Louis or Rocky belong. Louis when hurt, was generally cautious and clinched and did what he could. I guess I didn't phrase the question well. I mean fight the best in the most resilient but effective kind of way. I think Conn over-extended himself thinking he could finish Louis. That greed suckered him really, but I don't think Louis belongs on the top. Rocky was tough as nails but when hurt he generally tried to clinch or get low. He didn't have the same resilience that Jack had when hurt, which is at the same time kind of crazy but ended up being effective.

I guess another way to pose the question is.

Was any fighter more dangerous hurt than Jack Dempsey?

Tunney/Greb I think can belong on the top of the list. Tunney was particularly smart when hurt, but not dangerous. In a sense, like Ali, but he tended to run/move more than clinch.

Benn is a good nomination. So is Holyfield.

I think Gatti is a potential name, but he had a resilience to burst back. He wasn't necessarily dangerous when hurt, just never out of the fight.

Im a huge fan of Dempsey but his 'Beast' reputation was built on his destruction of Willard who was basically a 'heavy bag' in that fight .. Dempsey was destructive especially before he was champion but he was flawed in many ways and mythologised in many ways .... I have him as a top 5 Heavyweight of all time but thats because im a biased fan ..

Theres plenty of fighters that dished out some punishment, but you have to judge how good the opposition is to judge how good the punishment actually is .. Any top fighter can dish out hurt on an inferior opponent ..
