One thing about the term overrated; because its one of those terms thrown out there with no thought... How is Eubank generally regarded by people, in a British context and a world context? How should he be regarded?
Hes generally regarded one of the greatest British boxers of all time which he isnt, never fought the top guys in the division. Thats why hes overrated.
He is one of the great British fighters though. I don't see him in many top 10's, but you name 20 better for me?
I'd be stuggling to name twenty but hes outside my top ten indeed. I consider him great domestically but he failed to make a splash on the world scene.
Exactly, he has to be a British great unless there are ridiculous standards whereby only 10 or 15 fighters are great. Nobody considers him an ATG in a world sense. Never have I seen him even make a top 100, or for anybody claim he's a true great globally. He isn't 'overrated' IMO, he's rated exactly as he should be. Criticisms of his record are valid but to be overrated you have to have an understanding of how he's rated to begin with.
Rating him in the top hundred would be overrating him so severly you'd need to seek medical help, I'm not saying people think hes a top 100 all time great what I'm generally saying is I hear alot of people saying Eubank could compete with guys fighting around at the same time but he never proved this. Maybe I've worded it wrong but I think hes often held in higher esteem by some than he deserves to be.
What's to say he couldn't compete with them? He did more than compete with Nigel Benn so why not others? Competing is different to winning, even, there is nothing at all contraversial about saying he'd compete. We aren't exactly talking about a completely unproven scrub here.
Can you expand on the first three names you mention and why that is the case? That is just an empty statement, there is nothing to even discuss there. From the point of view that they embarrass him and its not even competitive. Thanks.
No problem. First off McCallum who proved himself at middleweight by beating up Watson, a fighter Eubank struggled against twice, also beating Collins, another Eubank conqueror (he wasnt that far out of his prime). Head to head he was a superior boxer in almost every department, perhaps about the same on chin one of his best weapons was his body punch, something Eubank was extremely adverse to. I see him stopping Eubank with his crippling punches to the body. Nunn was too quick for Eubank and just a far superior technical boxer. Eubank simply does not have the skills to touch Nunn who would outbox him all night, Nunn might not even have to get involved not that it would matter if he did. Mind you out of the four this is the one I give Eubank a puncher's chance of winning. Nothing more. James Toney simply wouldnt be hurt even if Eubank landed, his counter-punching ability would destroy Eubank as he came forward and got tagged by Toney all night. Again superior boxer technically and on a different level. Eubank failed to dominate mediocre challengers at middleweight how do you expect him to overcome the imposing presence of Toney? No way, he gets badly taken apart and loses on points. But overall those guys proved themselves against great fighters which Eubank never did. They could all fight at elite level.
Toney-Eubank would probably be snoozefest. Two sharp counter punchers with good reflexes unwilling to come forward, neither having a chance to hurt the other with single shots.
I'm not sure Toney/Eubank would play out at all like that. Why would Eubank come forward? It's far easier to let James Toney come forward and counterpunch him, and thats Eubank's natural game anyway, why would he change that up and play into Toney's hands? At worst Eubank would hold his ground and try to keep it on the outside, no way he walks right into Toney's comfort zone at mid/close range. The man is not stupid. Toney struggles with athletic counterpunchers that can box from the outside and take advantage of his lack of footwork. Eubank can assume that role quite comfortably. And as for the people Eubank struggled with, it wasn't all plain sailing for Mr Toney if you look back through some of his fights at his supposed peak. He has probably actually been more consistent at LHW upwards, he might not reach the same peak of performance but generally he's been consistent which is not something you could say for his lighter days; [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLyd0yZ2n2o[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhJiWraKG3U"][/ame]
Tiberi was cheated. The decision was so bad that there was a Congressional investigation! Eubank was fun to watch. Not all his fights were good though.
