I will admit it. Frankly, I have no idea how much a boxer will earn on average from a fight, or who has earned what apart from some of the real obvious fights like Floyd ($20M) v Oscar ($35M).

So for the purpose of this thread, please educate me by posting up any figures you can remember of the top of your head about how much a specific fighter has earned from a certain fight.

I don't think there is a true "average"...in the sense that the mean, median and mode are probably all over the place. There's just way too many different circumstances and variables across the professional level of the sport on the whole.

I understand this. I would just like to get some figures brandished around so I can get a sort a good sort of understanding.

Are those all from a common source? What is it, if I may ask?

I think its pretty disgraceful how much more the heavyweights earn. Lower weight fighters put on the better action for fractions of the purse !

I can think of the second Calzaghe versus Beyer fight that was held in Germany. I remember reading that Calzaghe got something like 1 million euro's or the equivalent of £700k. Thats really good money for a fight abroad, considering there are no gambles on gate fees etc, less worries for Warren at the time. In his book, Calzaghe mentions about purses and how the business worked. I think he spent a big part of his first big purse on a new car, BMW.

Also, they tended to get paid a wage a week or a month and then a share of the purses. That way boxers can have a mortgage etc, and a living wage. This sort of explains how it works.

In terms of Hatton, I find it difficult to imagine how a big IBF title fight with a huge purse for Tsyzu, sanction fees etc created any more money than one of his typical WBU fights in front of 20000-30000 fans. Those WBU fights were real money fights. I would imagine hundreds of thousands if not £500k purses at the time.

If anyone has any real facts, I would be interested. :good

Some boxers get a signing on fee as living expenses while they build. Promoters often provide loans and help the fighter out in the early stages when money's scarcer.

It really depends on the fighter, i guess and how valuable they are to their promoter.

Not that this has anything to do with pro purses on average, but these are some tidbits I've always found interesting...

Bernard Hopkins earned $350 in his pro debut.

Joe Louis earned $59 in his.

Juan Manuel Marquez and Nacho declined $1.5 million to fight Erik Morales, then fought Chris John for 30k.

In the LaMotta-Cerdan middleweight title bout, the challenging Raging Bull earned 15% of the total gate - about $19k. Cerdan had the option of either a cool 100k or 40% of the gate, which his manager overestimated. Thinking the event would pull in 300k - meaning 120k for the champ - they opted for the percentage instead of the fixed guarantee. As it turns out, $127,810 was raked in (barely more than was expected to go in the Frenchman's pocket) - and on top of losing his title Cerdan was screwed out of half his potential earnings as he only got $50k for his troubles.

There was a time that Trinidad had a contract with DKP where he had to make at least 10 mil per fight
