Muhammad Ali and Roberto Duran are obvious.

Ray Leonard? You have to dominate divisions in order to be considered to be a top fighter. Leonard lost his title to Duran, won is back in a fiasco, and barely escaped Hearns. The rest of his defenses were ho-hum. Leonard was not a dominant fighter at welterweight. Nor was his dominant at middleweight. He didn't beat Hagler and then retired without defending his title. He wouldn't even give Hagler a rematch. He was embarrassed at 154 lbs by Terry Norris.

There are other fighters far more deserving than Leonard: Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Roy Jones Jr., Bob Foster, Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes, Jose Napoles, Carlos Monzon, Alexis Arguello - just to name a few.

But I guess if Barack Obama can be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for doing very little in the way of peace, Leonard can be given such a lofty perch despite not being the dominant fighter of even the small period of time in which he fought. Unless of course reality is important to you.

Why does that mean anything? He stopped two ATG HOFers that had never before been stopped.

You could just as well say, "Ali was not dominant at HW. He beat Liston in fiascoes, won a bunch of ho-hum defenses, lost the biggest fight of his career to Frazier, should've lost to Shavers and Young, never gave either one rematches, was embarrassed by Norton, Spinks, Holmes, Berbick, Cooper, Jones, etc. etc."

Or achievements aren't.

How sweet of you to put my rebuttal in your own post. That's the point, isn't it? If you aren't the dominant fighter in your division then what have you achieved that could possibly put you in the top 3 since Robinson?

Pernell Whitaker didn't lose to the best lightweight of his generation. Ray Leonard did. Leonard was thoroughly dominated by Duran. Whitaker put on a clinic against Chavez.

And Hearns was giving Leonard a boxing lesson until overtraining and a partisan referee conspired to save Leonard's title.

Leonard didn't stop Duran. Duran stopped himself. And the ref stopped Benitez - for no good reason.

Hardly the stuff that makes a fighter the third best since Robinson. :roll:

Here's another name who tops Leonard: Marvin Hagler. Uncrowned champion for years and twelve defenses of his middleweight championship. Hagler was truly dominant. And Hagler didn't need a fan boy referee to save him from Hearns. He crushed him.

 

Of course if someone had came thru and beat for titles Whitaker at 135, Chavez at 140, Tito at 147, Jackson at 154, Jones at 160, whoever at 175 and ko'ed Tyson at Heavy they couldn't possible be top 3 since SRR via your theory, no?

 

How about beating three ATG HOFers in that division, plus the dominant ATG HOFer at a higher weight class while coming straight off a layoff.

You mean the Hagler that Leonard beat?

Which means he limited himself to only one weight class and didn't go after heavier champions like Leonard did.

But how many ATGs or HOFers did he have to fight to be so?
