It was Mario Veit who Calzaghe fought twice as he was later made mandatory several yrs after the first fight. Beyer wasn't interested in fighting Calzaghe and in the end got tuned by Kessler instead. Calzaghe and Warren both didn't want the Veit rematch as they saw no point to it after Veit was ko'd out in less than 2 mins in Cardiff. The fact that it did happen and in Germany illustrated the financial muscle of the German tv networks as the above estimate for Calzaghe's purse is actually on the conservative side. They couldn't believe the money thrown at them
The rematch where the miney disparity was in St.Louis. Judah lost the first fight I guess so that might have been a reason.
Unless that was a typo, it says that Judah made 100k for both fights against 800k and 1.2 mil respectively for Spinks, not that I care that much but damn
Actually Spinks didn't want to give Zab a rematch. Judah showed faith and said he would fight Spinks again for $100,000 and in his backyard. I quote"Put the fight anywhere Don and I will knock him out. That was one of the most satisfying fights of 2005 to me. I've always liked Zab. I've even went to see him fight live. I just think he has too much going on around him and he's actually fghting guys a lot bigger than him. Standing side by side with him he is not a big guy.
If I'm not mistaken only the second fight was $100,000. The first fight had to be atleast 60-40. Judah had only one lose at the time. Spinks was Judah's first welterweight fight. Both were Don King fighters.
Jaffay: Do you know of any other sources that have this kind of information? I think its very interesting to compare purses in the 80's to today and see how they have grown over the years.
fascinating posts to see how quickly a fighters purse can escalate from 50 000 to million to millions - when a fighter beats an A side fighter- and becomes the A side guy. particularly in rematches. i mean look how bad Zab got screwed for his fights with corey- 100 000?? and how much Floyd concedes to his opponents once he was A side- he barely gives them 20 percent- whereas when he was coming up - he had to struggle to get the purse, boxing is about paying your dues- hard time, full time. also 3 things stand out for me. how much heavyweights- regardless of caliber make- more than little guys-even though i doubt their viewership is high. but for some reason they all earn much much more- heavyweight prices of the 80's is equal to welter averages now. 2. How much sugar ray leonard made in his time- or any time- those purses would be comparable to anybodies today- even without inflation- if he were fighting today- his purses would be relative to him earning 50 million a fight! 3. again, how hard it is to make any coin in this game. for 99 percent of fighters- its just about getting that one shot against a champ- and getting to earn 200 000 or so- to set u up and buy a house- thats it. thats the most anybody can realistically hope for- to be an opponent. there are really only 5 to 7 guys in each era that are earning above a million dollars per fight- and then it drops off dramatically. those guys are earning 10- 20 million, but then it drops to 500 000 for the next 20 or so guys. then the rest are making a pittance of 10 000 or so- for the next 100 guys. the rest? barely more than baggage wages. again...rough ****in sport man- no wonder the sport is dying in participation to the nfl.
