No worries, i know you'd be keen to add it to your Walcott files as it is a pretty big notch in the belt.
And here she be...... Big Book of Boxing September 1981 "The Night Jersey Joe Shocked the World" Just one thing to remember i guess, he hadn't actually fought Marciano at this time so he's excluded obviously. So apologies for my first post atsch :good
What I like about this statement is that its not the typical "the fighter that I beat hits much harder than the fighter that beat me" bull****.
seeing Walcott - Marciano 1 only yesterday , and walcott's muscularity , i have to agree , i think he had the best physique of these 4. louis is overrated. marciano was the best of these 4 both p4p and h2h DESPITE having no arms . that is what makes him p4p so good.
He was not a poor finisher, he was a couinter puncher and he was a defensive first fighter, he dropped his opponents with well timed and accurate power shots...when Marciano got right up on solid legs, Joe went at him but Rocky started trading.. He felt he was outboxing Louis in the first fight hand him down 2 times so he stayed with his plan...Joe went down but Joe was always dangerous....Walcott got out of his style and got agressive vs Joe after dropping him in fight 2 and walked into a wirlwind....JJW was a very hard one punch pinpoint counter puncher but was a counter puncher and mover...he timed his punches well. as far as your remark of him being a cruiser...Walcott was a real heavyweight counterpuncher and he hit much harder than Ali, Holmes,Jimmy Young,Patterson,Eddie Chambers, Chris Byrd, and he could move as well as all of them think about that....JJW was also extremly ripped in these days of weight training and enhanced muscular growth, he would be muscle bulkier Today but he would not need to be.
On another note, how good was the left hook Walcott hit Rocky with early in their 1st fight? Seemed pretty similar. Was it the added wear and tear of the fight that caused Charles to go down or was Marciano's chin THAT good?
Probably a bit of both. Marciano wasn't a fast starter, and got caught very hard very early with a perfectly timed shot. Charles got nailed perfectly with one of the best left uppercuts (or hook, a bit of both) that I've ever seen and he got KO'd.
Walcott was known as a big puncher, by his opponents and contemporaries. He looks like he throws every shot with power on film too. He's definitely a banger. He wasn't a KO artist, he beat guys up on points a lot. Though of course his 3rd fight with Charles is one of the greatest KOs of all-time.
It was a great punch but as said above, Marciano wasn't a fast starter and he was also a bit stunned from Walcott's early onslaught. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFX0F0qUM-Q[/ame] Charles never saw the punch coming.
Yeah, that changes things up a bit. Jersey Joe walked away with his arms up thinking he knocked Marciano out according to Bert Sugar. It does make some sense as Walcott seemed away and befuddled that Marciano got up and was stay around after that big punch. He didn't, and it was such a short punch. And that's where all the power comes from. I don't think Marciano saw the punch, either, though.
I think he was in better position to take that punch though, unlike Charles who was throwing a jab when the perfect counter hook/uppercut caught him flush on the chin. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2-5fq0sGMs[/ame] 1:00 Don't think Walcott ever walked away thinking he had knocked him out so that might count as yet another Bert Sugar myth. He seemed to take a long look at Rocky after downing him. This content is protected This content is protected
