Mush fella, I shouldn't have directed that at you personally, I feel bad for doing so. Apologies, friend. It's just I worry about the future of small hall boxing in Ireland. It's precarious, make no mistake about it. We need to support shows like these or we all lose out.
I mentioned Paddy Hyland and DolPhil - also should have mentioned Paschal Collins. He's announcing another Cork show with Spike headlining in November. Press conference in Cork Thursday. More good news. Fair play, Paschal.
The presser is on in the Commons at 1pm, and the show will be in Neptune in November from what I hear. I'll find out off Spike after the presser tomorrow.
If you're going along to the Commons, Mush, you might let us know what the story is with the show. I'm stuck court reporting all day tomorrow and I'll miss it. D'oh!
Would be nice to see if Spikes team want to bring him up a new level of opposition! Henry coyle anyone!!
Looks like you're memory is a bit foggy , the guy you're thinking of fought Power. Was a good scrap while it lasted too, possibly the best of the night. Sweeney's was decent that night aswell, only the main event left a sour taste in the mouth.
Boxing: Sparks fly as Sexton tells Rogan to grow up over 'I was robbed' claim By Thomas Myler Thursday October 15 2009 THE bitter war of words ahead of the year's most eagerly-awaited heavyweight grudge fight shows no sign of abating. At this stage, it looks like Belfast's Martin Rogan and his Norwich rival Sam Sexton may still be tossing verbal insults at each other up to the time of their rematch in the ring at the Odyssey Arena on November 6. In their first fight, at the same Belfast venue in May, Rogan lost his unbeaten record and his Commonwealth title when the fight ended controversially after he was stopped due to a badly swollen left eye near the end of the eighth round. "I was robbed," said Rogan yesterday, a claim disputed by Sexton who has pointed out that he was ahead at the intervention and would have gone on to victory. At the time of the stoppage, Sexton looked in desperate trouble after a smashing left hook and a follow-through right cross sent him into a daze. He turned his back on Rogan and was leaning on the ropes. Puffed Referee Dave Parris could have stopped it there and then, or ruled it a knockdown, but instead called them together and they resumed. About half a minute later, Parris called the doctor to examine Rogan's badly puffed eye, and the medic recommended a stoppage. "The eye is fine now and there is no doubt that this time I will make no mistake," said Rogan (38), who added that he felt like Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. "Training is going so well that if somebody told me I could fly, I would believe them. "I definitely feel I have found the secret of eternal youth because I'm fitter and stronger now than I was when I was 21." Sexton (24), unbeaten in 12 fights, yesterday dismissed Rogan's remarks, and laughed off the challenger's Peter Pan quotes: "It wouldn't surprise me if he started saying that he's been getting advice from Tinkerbell next. It would be understandable because he seems to be away with the fairies if he thinks he can beat me." SHORT JABS MEXICAN featherweight Israel Vazquez, a possible opponent for Bernard Dunne early in 2010, came back after a 19-month lay-off due to eye surgery when he stopped Angel Priolo of Colombia in a ninth-round TKO in Los Angeles over the weekend. On the amateur scene, the National U-21 Championships get under way at the National Stadium in Dublin tomorrow and continue on Saturday, with the finals tomorrow week.
