Hate to say it... but it's Smith for me too. If Quigley boxes the same as he did against Dodson then he wont find Smith running in with his chin up and arms down.

Quigley has it in him to pull something special off when he wants to, I hope that that is the Tony that turns up.

  4. Heart says Quigley, head says Smith.

If Smith on top form turns up, he has too much class, but Smith on top form very rarely turns up.

Plumbing for a Quigley UD, expecting a Smith UD.

I think Smith will be too skilled for Quigley, Quilgey will battle hard show plenty of heart and not disgrace himself but will lose on points I reckon.

Paul Smith wins this.Mid to late stoppage.
Can't understand everyone wanting a Quigley win. Smith seems a sound fella. And far more talented.

Yeah i have thought that too. Both seem like decent blokes. Maybe people arent pulling for Smith as he has not being stepped up a level when it has seemed like he should be. He seems to have been buried on undercards quite a lot but i have a feeling this could be his coming out party at domestic level, i think Smith late stoppage after a brave Quigley effort.

the thing about paul is, hes a fighter who rises with the level of his opponent.

you give him a **** 6 rounder, he wont be too bothered but with this bein his own card, i know he will rise to the:bbb occasion.

im expecting a Smith early-mid stoppage because Quigley cant take the bodyshots!

maybe you're right, I've seen him put in a few dodgy performances. I'd never really considered that that may be the reason.

Nothing to do with Smith, just that I've met Quigley a few times and he's sound. Never met Smith.

Nothing more to it than that.

  13. Same with me mate, although I have met Smith too.

I wouldn't say anyone on this thread is being out of order wanting Quigley to win, he's just a good honest lad making the most of his abilities, whereas people may see Paul as squandering them somewhat at times.

Tony Quigley defends his British super-middleweight title in a ‘natural’ all-Liverpool clash with Paul Smith in the city later this month (October 30), a bill that also features a cracking British welterweight title showdown between Kell Brook and Michael Jennings.
Quigley won the title earlier this year with a last-gasp stoppage of former champ Tony Dodson – another Liverpool man – but needs to overcome Smith as well to strut the docks with total self-pride. Not that Quigley really needs to prove himself after finally overwhelming Dodson in what will surely be a prime candidate for domestic fight of the year. Quigley, a stocky, strong-looking fellow in the mould of Rocky Marciano, took the fight at short notice (for the injured Brian Magee) and was dropping down from light-heavyweight after his only loss to the excellent Nathan Cleverly (five rounds, body shots) but showed he is as powerful and relentless as ever as he came from behind to stop the more experienced “Garston Warrior” in the 12th and last round. Trained by his father (Tony Senior) Quigley took his record to 13-1 (6). At 24 the Tower Hill strongman can only get better.
Smith, from Kirkdale, is a couple of years older and more experienced at 27-1 (15) but - despite once injuring Ricky Hatton in a sparring session - has beaten nobody like Dodson, unless you count overrated Americans Jonathan Reid and David Banks or Wolverhampton’s capable Conroy McIntosh, who floored and nearly beat him. He really went off the boil after a brief stint on Contender III in the States in 2007 (he was the first European ever to feature on the show) and dropped a shock 10-round decision to Coventry’s grizzled old Steve Bendall last year, losing his unbeaten record into the bargain.
Nevertheless, Smith has won four on the spin since, including a vital warm-up for this against Czech Michal Bilak in July on points over eight rounds. The champion, on the other hand, has not fought since Dodson last March.
Like Quigley, Smith looks more suited to super-middlweight than his previous division of middleweight, where he lost to Bendall. One of three boxing brothers (Liam and Stephen), Paul is a former amateur star who dropped an 18-16 verdict to gifted Canadian Jean Pascal in the light-middleweight final of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and edged out talented Scot Craig McEwan in the semis (20-19). As a pro, at super-middleweight, he represents a real threat to anyone at domestic level with his strength, power and particularly his body punching, when you consider how Cleverly dismantled Quigley downstairs.
“Smigga” has stopped 15 of his 27 victims, 11 inside four rounds.
Both former England internationals, Smith went further than Quigley by winning an ABA title and that silver in the Commonwealth Games, which possibly gives him the edge.
This will be undoubtedly tough and competitive in the early rounds, bruising and bloody even. Neither is particularly quick or defensive-minded, and Smith does mark up, but one can envisage Smith’s strength, better boxing and those body shots ultimately proving the difference.

    Good article Bennie.

Only thing I disagree with is you giving Smith the edge due to his amateur exploits. Smith's style was much more suited to the am's than Quigley's was. I dont really think it gives either an advantage.

The body work is interesting though. Lets see what shape Quigley come in at. I know the Dodson fight was short notice, but if Quigley's in that shape again then Smith could really do a number. Hopefully he'll be fit as f*ck though and we'll get another barnstormer!
