Pavlik had never fought a tricky, slick boxer like Hopkins, so he was totally unprepared for that style. Even if Pavlik had won, that slick, tricky style has, 100 percent of the time over Hopkins' career, made even the most aesthetically pleasing boxers look boring and clumsy. It was the biggest-money fight available in the short-run. But in the long-run, it was a terrible concept, and its result really set him back with some fans, fairly or no.

I think that as long as Pav's supposed personal problems and of course the staph infection haven't gotten to him then he's going to wear Williams down and stop him around the 8th or 9th round. I just feel that whilst B-Hop showed that Pavlik is a beatable fighter, you need to be both a very good defensive boxer with good movement and have the power to make him respect you to acheive this. Paul is more of a come forward and trade guy whose power hasn't really been proven at MW yet (unless you count the KO of Andy Kolle, who is nothing more than a journeyman), so I can't see him doing what Hopkins did. I reckon Paul will give a great account of himself for the 1st half of the fight, making it fantastic to watch, before Kelly's superior power and equally high workrate grinds Williams down.

With all that being said though, a very high proportion of Pavliks fans on here are really ****ing disrespectful towards both Williams and his fans. I understand that they want their guy to win (as do I), but theres no need to act like you've got sand in your vagina because someone thinks otherwise. It's particularly grating reading guys like Booradleys disrespectful posts because it's clear that he is a very knowledgable guy outwith the Pavlik debates. Williams is great for boxing and I wish him all the best (after the Pav fight that is :D).

I talked to Billy last night and he will have some pretty good opportunities around the corner at 154. Also, I saw Harry Joe Yorgey on Saturday and he looks to be in great shape for the Angulo fight in November.

10 pages of comments which I couldnt really be arsed reading, so apologies if I'm repeating anything already said...

Williams v Pavlik for me is an interesting fight and a close one to call, but I cant help but think that Pavlik is on a lose-lose here.

If he wins then people will say it was 'one weight to far' for Williams and Pavlik wont get the respect he deserves. If he is beaten then he's beaten by a blown up welterweight and it's even worse. Not quite sure what his motivation was for taking the fight.

That having been said, I'm made up he did. I'll go out on a limb though and say that I'm picking Williams.

I've read a few comments saying Williams is a 'come forward fighter'. Bull****. Williams fights from angles. He may not dance like Ray Leonard but he's not nearly as linear as he's being made out. There's a question whether he has the power to trouble Pavlik, but even if he doesnt then he could box a hundred rounds throwing 100 punches a round and still not tire. Questions for me are whether he's felt anything like Kelly's power. It's a massive test for Williams, but one if he gets through will put him in a marvellous position in this sport.

To beat Williams you need to be able to either (a) slip that long jab and get inside working away with hooks and uppercuts or (b) walk through his punches to land your own. Not a chance that Kelly is slipping that jab and getting inside (cant remember the last time I saw Pavlik throw a decent hook) but there is a possibility he could walk through Williams punches, I just dont think he'll work that angles well enough to land anything of note.

Pavlik is a good strong middleweight, but he lacks an awful lot (particularly upper body movement). Williams may lack power in this fight, which could be his downfall.

    But for me, Williams UD.

Props to both though on taking the fight in the first place!!

I think Pavlik took this fight because it was the 'biggest' available too him. I'm pretty sure it is what HBO wanted most.

Your analysis makes it sound as if Pdub still has the advantages he has enjoyed against shorter guys. I think the reach stats are misleading and we know Kelly can take to give.

    Good grief Hermit...

You really get your "panties in a wad", as another poster said, every time someone picks Williams to win against Pav. You may be right, but just try to understand that there are some folks out there who think Williams could win this.

And if it was such an easy, gimme fight, then why should Pav get credit for winning it?
