Was this ever proved to be true ?, if so its pretty funny haha, is from wiki though so may be made up. Funny thing is i have heard something like this, but believe it occured in rocky 2, when sly tried to use another famous black heavyweight from the 70s for the creed role, but i cant remember who it was, he apparently hit sly so hard, who had been training hard, and really felt he could hang with a real fighter to make it look better, was decked and badly hurt, so they got in a actor carl weathers to play creed

This from wiki about shavers. is it true, has he ever mentioned it ?, or is it as i suspect just one of those little tales that gets bigger and bigger over the years, and in the end no one can remember where it first came from --

"Earnie Shavers was initially the favorite to land the role of Clubber Lang. According to Shavers, Sylvester Stallone called him and told him the role was his once they got a formal audition out of the way. The audition was set up, with Shavers and Stallone sparring. As Shavers tells it, Stallone kept goading him not to hold back and to hit him with everything he had, but Shavers was reluctant to do so. Eventually, after Stallone began to hit him, Shavers lost his temper and punched him under the ribs, doubling Stallone over. Stallone was helped out of the ring without saying a word, and according to Shavers, he never heard from Stallone again. Interestingly however, this story has never been corroborated by anyone involved with the film."

Probaly a bit of topic for some in here, but i reckon if any one will know about a former boxer it will be someone in here

think I heard that one but i also got another story. From a good source who actually ran the main street gym In Los Angeles where they filmed one of the Rocky movies. Where Duran and Stallone were sparring and Stallone was complaining that Duran was hitting him to hard. When Duran was told he said "pinche Maricon "(****ing ***) im barely tapping him. It was a small part in the movie when Durans boxing circles around him and Mick(Burgess Meredith) says something about how can you let this little twerp box rings around you.

Duran did spar with Balboa in Rocky 2.... It was a small scene, but kool.......

Shavers also sparred with Balboa prior to Rocky 3..... And reports do state that Shavers nailed Balboa good on a few occasions, but that ain't the reason why Shavers failed to get the role.... Shavers auditioned for Rocky 3 along with Joe Frazier, and both guys failed the screen tests cuz they were murdering their lines and the English language..... So in came MR.T who really impressed during his screen test............... "Rocky 3" is a good flick.............

:goodI agree that Rocky 3 is underrated maybe not as quality of a movie as the first but more entertaining.

MR.T steals the show from Balboa in # 3 all the way...... MR.T is the real reason why the flick was such a hit....... "T" was scary as hell in 1982......

I think Rocky 4 was the worst. Horrible music played to much:roll: Kinda Corny. I mean the movie was Ok but it was the worst of the rockys with 5 close behind. Best ones were 1and3,then 2,6,5,4

    # 4 was too political....... However, since I am a 'Balboa' nuthugger, I can deal / hang with all six flicks.........

I saw an interview with Stallone on Leno or Letterman and he told the story about him and Shavers.....He said they were moving around and Shavers hit him a little and he said Whoa thats all, and they stopped the scene

S: You know, I learned my lesson. You think that you play the role long enough, and you assume, “Oh, I can compete with a professional.” Well, I had that scenario set up. In Rocky III I decided I was going to use a professional athlete – this is before Mr. T came along. The first fellow I brought in the ring, I brought in Joe Frazier. Joe Frazier got in the ring, and I’ll never forget, he was wearing a green suit, he just took his shirt off – he was wearing his street pants, his street shoes – put on the gloves and again, within less than 30 seconds, he came across the ring and cracked me. He gave me four stitches over one eye. I was looking at the lights, I couldn’t believe it. My fantasy was completely destroyed that you can last more than however long it takes a professional athlete to actually get to you, that’s how long you last in the ring. That’s how long it takes.

The next guy who came in – and this was idiotic on my behalf – was a fellow named Ernie Shavers. Ernie Shavers was sitting in the dressing room, and I saw him taping his hands, and he has a very high voice, and he goes, “Thank you, Mr. Stallone, for this opportunity. We’ll get in there and spar a little bit.” He was very cordial, and he had this really high voice. But I watched him tape his hands with air conditioning duct tape, and I’m going, “Oh my God.” So he gets in the ring, and I’ll never forget this, he hits me on the shoulder so hard that I capsize, go against the ropes, fall down to the ground, and I started to almost laugh hysterically, like when you hit your shin against a pipe. I never felt … I said, “Was there something in your glove?” Then his manager pulls me aside, and said, “Seriously, they don’t know how to pull their punches.” I said, “But he’s not even trying hard!” He said, “Oh, we have trouble in the gym because he actually breaks guys’ jaws off the hinges, that’s how hard he hits.” So I said, “He’s out.”

So I got a pansy like Mr. T. (Laughs) He was a vacation compared to this. And then I tried one more time, and I got in the ring with Roberto Duran. He stood in one spot, to prove a point, and every time I threw a punch, he would slip and bang me, and bang me, to the body, that the next day my arms were green and purple. I looked like bad cheese.

Stallone said ring realism occasionally led to trouble in the filming of Rocky II. One of his sparring partners, for example, was former lightweight champion Roberto Duran.

"A few times, it got out of control," he said. "You're sparring and you say to yourself, 'Hey, maybe I can go with this guy.' Then you trade a few shots, and you realize you're an actor again."

Which fighter was actualy the inspiration for Clubber Lang?

I always assumed that it was Sonny Liston.
