Froch vs. Dirrell - the worst decision of 2009?

I gave two rounds to Sturm when I scored the fight live, and they were still really close rounds. And there were maybe 3 close rounds the whole night. Gevor threw 100 punches pretty much every round and landed around 30% of them. Sturm probably threw fewer punches than Gevor landed, and connected at a much lower rate than Gevor. I had already started writing an article about Gevor upsetting Sturm in dominant fashion when they announced the decision. Not only was the decision unanimous, but the ref did everything in his power to help Sturm. Every time the fighters even got close (no clinching, mind you) the ref pushed them away from each other. The ref ruled a clear Sturm KD as a slip.

Martinez v Cintron was an epic fraud, one of the worst robberies I've ever seen. Other than that, Froch v Dirrell would probably take the honors.

 

I thought it was one of the better decisions of the year so far, especially if it signals the start of a trend of rewarding the kind of boxing I want to see, which is to say the opposite of what Dirrell did.

Below-the-belt ducking, running (different from footwork), unnecessary holding, intentional "slips" - if these actions were rewarded with failure in future bouts, I (along with most other casual viewers, I suspect) would be very happy indeed. I have no doubt I will be disappointed, but I can still hope.

Note: I'm not saying that Froch fought especially well. I think he fought an honest fight, however, under the circumstances.

 

No, because froch beat him, I had it 115-112 no way dirrel won that.

 

The decision to post this thread with froch/dirrell even in the mention.
There is very little controversy in this decison. You run, initiate clinces, and fall many many times, and you lose.

i had it 116-113 for Dirrell, that said it was a hard fight to score at times, the worst ive SEEN this year for me was the diaz fight

Fury Vs Mcdermott or Diaz Malignaggi were far worse

 

i'd go for diaz-malignaggi
that was a good fight and easier to see malignaggi shouldve won it

i think berto-collazo and cotto-clottey were both very close but the right guy won

cintron-martinez and froch-dirrell were just ugly fights, i'm actually ok with the draw and split decisions...

 

Worst fight to score, but not the worst decision. The Cintron fight was a farce. Haven't seen Sturm/Gevor.

 

I agree with all 3, Cintron - Martinez was a WTF? But Berto - Collazzo was a rip off

 

I notice nowhere in there did you say anything about being hit by the other guy's punches, let alone hitting him more cleanly and more often.

I'm not upset with the decision. The run'n'shoot style is boring in general and Dirrell made it worse with his whining/falling but if you score based on stated criteria... yes, there's controversy here.

Dirrell fought a dumb fight and he's plenty young enough to let it make him a better (and more watchable) fighter. If Froch survives even 1 of his next 2 fights, I have no problem with him advancing. But it's in no way obvious he won this fight.
