You are right,and although i put Duran above SRL . Sugar is also one of the best ever in fact hes probably in my top 5or 6 pfp and Duran is top 3 arguably #1 so there really isnt much seperating the two as far as greatness. Remember that although Duran was a good puncher at welter,he was a Great puncher at lightweight,that would have made more of a difference. Leonard was pretty hurt in that 2nd round.

 

Saying Duran's chin wasn't great because of what Hearns did to him is like saying Gene Fullmer's chin wasn't great because he was starched by Sugar Ray Robinson. Or that Dick Tiger's chin wasn't great because he was decapitated by Bob Foster. All great chins that happened to meet perfectly placed punches thrown by ATG punchers.

 

No way. He is great but being the greatest ever? The greatest fighter lays it all in the ring and does not quit. Worst is people are trying to defend the guys loses like he is out of shape, being overweight, unprepared, etc. Ridiculous.

 

I think in Durans way of Rationale he thought SRL was just being a clown,combi ned with the frustration he was feeling. I dont see it as quiting in the sense that other people might. He actually was competetive in that fight (although definitley behind on points) not saying it was excusable. Im just trying to explain from what was going on through Durans mind at the time,he didnt realize the ramifactions until it was said and done.

Sorry mate, but Leonard really didn't put in an amazing performance. He gets full marks for digging deep, and showing everyone that he wasn't this pretty boy who didn't like to get hit. He took Duran's best shots, and worked well on the inside himself. However, I'll always be of the opinion that allowed Duran to dictate everything in the ring that night, and he strayed from his usual fight plan. It wasn't a great performance, but Duran was unbelievably good on the night. Great fight, though.

Duran had one of the greatest beards of his time. The guy was nothing but a 135lbs, and he would later go on to take Hagler and Barkley's best shots. Leonard is often underrated in the punching department, but he would often stop fighters clocks. Ask Davey Boy Green and the much bigger Donny LaLonde about that. Not great fighters, but they were brutally stopped. Duran, among many other qualities he had, did possess a great chin and the knockout loss to one of the hardest hitting Welterweights of all time does not change that.

Holy ****, that was a picture perfect hook landing flush when Duran was throwing his own punch; that's always the moment you get knocked down/out.
