Power of Julian Jackson Speed of Roy Jones Chin of Marvin Hagler Technique of Roberto Duran Heart of Muhammad Ali Defence of Nicolino Locche Footwork/Movement of Pernell Whitaker
I chose this out your many posts... Whitakers whole style is based around his lack of power. If he has great power then he doesnt work as hard on his defence and would stand and trade more, leaving himself open. Hearns is hearns BECAUSE he had a suspect chin. His fights were so exciting because of that weakness. Whitaker is whitaker because he was a brilliant ring general, with amazing defence etc etc. He did have some (relatively) close fights in his prime, the Nelson one sticks out in my mind as being 7-5 in Whitakers favour, your making Whitaker out to being one asset short of a god and i think that too much.
I'll keep it simple: Give Pavlik healthy hands, and then give him Arguello's skill/technique, and BHop's brain.
It's kind of obvious that any fighters' style is based upon his own attributes mate, that's not really a point at all. I am aware Whitaker's boxing style was based on his strengths (speed and reflexes) and weaknesses (power), and that Hearns was exciting because he could be on the front foot one minute and on the back the next. These things are a given. But the discussion turned to giving one fighter one extra attribute, and so you answer the question set. If I had to give one fighter an attribute to push him closer to the perfect fighter, I would give Whitaker power. Would it change him? Obviously. Would he actually be perfect? Obviously not. But IMO that would make him as close to complete as anyone could be with only one of their existing attributes enhanced. Whitaker would change his style if he had power, but I don't believe he would become a power-happy KO-hungry beast chasing his opponents round the ring like John Mugabi. IMO he would retain his sensibility of outboxing, but he would simply be more aggressive. Plenty of fighters who had excellent power were still boxers and not just head-hunters. Also, even if Whitaker became more adventurous, he still had brilliant reflexes and a good chin. It's pure opinion and speculation of course, but I don't believe he would have become a totally different fighter with one attribute enhanced. He would have been a slightly different but considerably more effective one. Sorry, but I watched the Whitaker-Nelson fight again only the other night. Anyone who had that 7-5 needs help. The judges' scorecards were abysmal.
give Nonito Donaire a left hand that wont break everytime he throws it and you'll see something close to it.....maybe a little more chin as well, even though his is solid i have seen him rocked b4, but then again that happens to everyone right? and another one would be, Shane Mosley with Mayweathers opposition...he'd be unbeatable, literally
Not god given or superhuman, heart-courage and granite chins are pretty much mandatory for irish boxers.
lol ok he lets the side down, but even look at Duddys chin or better still, Stevie Collins who had the whole package. Oh I said this in a different forum a while back but I could take a fair old whack myself, I think most of us are born with strong jaws and thick skulls for some reason.
I can definitely see what you were saying about Hearns. Give him a granite chin and he would be fearsome. For anyone. I just think Pea was already a bit more well-rounded, so giving him the only attribute he lacked would make him pretty much perfect at his best weights. But there are definitely good alternatives, Hearns being one, 93-03 Roy Jones with a granite chin being another decent shout. :good Regarding Whitaker's prime, I'm not sure I can think of another post-war fighter who had so many brilliant performances. Haugen, Nelson, Ramirez II, Chavez, McGirt I+II. Against two greats (Chavez, Nelson), and two very goods (McGirt + Ramirez) and one good (Haugen), Pea produced six astonishingly brilliant performances (McGirt I was great in a different way, showed a different side to Pea). Quite a prime IMO (and many regard his showing v peak Oscar as pretty special).
There was an old cliche in boxing called "strong punch, weak chin syndrome" . You really can't have it all otherwise you truly would be unstoppable and people wouldn't need to debate it in forums.
James Toneys skills, defense and chin + Roy Jones speed, power and athleticism + Bernard Hopkins focus, discipline and ring intelligence. The ultimate boxer and one hell of an ugly motherf***er on top of that.
