 Yes... i didnt start following boxing until around the time Fernando Vargas came around, when i was about 15 or so lol  So most of my favorite fighters are ones i have personal experiance with....

I like the Joe Walcotts (barbados demon, not so much jersey joe) the Tony Galentos, the Thai Tysons (galaxy), Joe Frazier and Hagler, would be some of my favorite fighters that were before my time, with Nigel Benn and Eubank probably being my favorite fighters from before i followed boxing...

but none can compare to the bond (no homo ) that one gets when theyve been through the heights of a career (the night cotto beat judah, the night cotto beat mosley) and feeling on top of the world when your guy has conquered, arguing out on the forums day in and day out year after year about your favs, suffering the horrible days when they are defeated and future put in question (cotto/margarito, vargas/hoya) ect.... and you feel that pit inside your stomach and feel for the fighters, and then they come back and reclaim lost glory. when you win and lose with your fighter, that just doesnt compare to someone from the past that i have no real connection to other then seeing their fights on tape.

not sure if that makes sense

Makes perfect sense, and great post. :good

I'm only 20 years of age, haven't been a fan of Boxing for too long, but I do a lot of research. I find that a lot of the older fighters had qualities lacking in the majority of todays fighters. Marco Antonio Barrera was the fighter that got me into the sport, but I only followed him out of pity. I saw him get beat up by Pacquiao on Eurosport, then I decided to follow him, hoping he'd bounce back. Watched all of his fights since, admired his technical prowess and fighting spirit. We all have our favorites. :good It's nice to hear someone talk so passionately about Boxing, it really is more than just a sport.

 How come? The moment I told people in the Lounge that I was only 20 years of age, I got ridiculed for "pretending" to be some kind of Boxing historian. I'm certainly not one of those, but I consider myself a student of the game and the more I learn about this beautiful sport the better. I find ESB to be very educational, when we aren't being abused by the likes of AngloSaxon, who is currently running riot in another one of my threads, claiming to be the second coming of Joe Calzaghe.

I wish. I missed out on so much because when I was 12-13, I had absolutely no interest in Boxing or anything outside of being an idiot in the streets. I am greatful that my dad is a big fight fan otherwise I'd probably be oblivious to the sweet science. I've been waiting for a fighter to come along that will capture my imagination, and I thought that fighter was Cristian Mijares. Unfortunately, he's hit a bit of a sour spot and the night he lost to Vic, those were hard times. Like Kirk said, you get that feeling in your stomach and stays for a few days.
