Would this be a successful tactic against him?

I noticed against Taylor that Abraham would drop his arms and shake them as if Taylor was deadening the arm slightly.

If you landed hard punches on his arms in the first 6 rounds, do you think you could sufficiently deaden them to make his punches less effective?

It does sound like a decent tactic, you should be able to take some of the power out of his punches and also force him to weaken his guard a bit. Just have to be careful not to get hit with a counter because if you're hitting him at arm level you're going to leave yourself wide open, plus you're not really scoring. It's a risk.

Yeah. He's certainly a tough cookie and not the kind that would just give up on his defence at the point of tiredness, but I do think that someone who brought a lot of educated pressure and power (like Pavlik or Andrade) could wear him out. It's a dangerous tactic to employ explicitly, as you risk punching yourself out. But it would take the vim out of some of his shots and would start hurting his neck and back. Marciano used to do this a lot.

 That has to be the most ridiculous tactic ever. People land all night on Abraham's arms who actually has stamina problems, and look at the success they have:

And should I remind you of the Taylor KO?

When did they every brought Winky's guard down?

he tends to win rounds throwing very little to start with so if you focus on his arms to get him to drop the guard you need to be throwing alot more than he is to get a sniff at taking the rounds.

and as posted above you are going to get smacked hard in the face if you start punching the arms against a counter puncher like abs.

dont see anyone out there at 168 that is fast enough to win a round against abs and work to the arms where you are not scoring anything while maintaining enough defence not to be put out cold by his laser guided right hand.

i feel the best way to beat him is to outwork him. pepper the **** out of his body like taylor was early on to get him to lower them arms a bit then go up top and force a way through the guard and throwing the uppercut from the outside like eubank used to do.
Oh and you must have stamina to keep this going for 12 rounds and have a very good chin.

I think there are only a few fighters who are able to do it...maybe Kessler, but I'm not sold on him yet.

My game plan would be to get some points together and then use the full size of the ring to avoid his punches. A kind of Sven Ottke like tactics. Of course you can only do that if you've good movement and stay concentrated for every single second of the fight.

kessler has a mean uppercut and also has great power and acuracy in his jab and straight shots and i feel he has the best chance of beating abs. he has proven he has the stamina to go 12 rounds against the best SMW there was and be competative througout. the first 3 rounds are going to be vital. how much damage can kessler do before abs starts swinging.
You can always use abs tactics on him by hooking to the ears forcing him to keep his hands a bit further apart to protect them which wil leave him open for the straight right down the middle.

we as boxing fans keep coming up with ways we could see to beat him but the people he is fighting have prob thought about them and tried them aswell but they dont seem to work.
If you want him to lose force him to get into the ring with tua and let them trade punched all night and let the best chin be left standing.

His guard makes hitting sick liver shots hard as you run the risk of hitting the point of his elbow and ****ing your hands up. that is why everyone ends up hitting low and gets the point taken off.

Didn't AA start dropping his hands in the later parts of the fight? I don't think he was practicing his slipping skills!

his slipping skills are pretty good though as when he dropped his hands taylor still could not hit anything but it meant abs was is a better position to throw the wild hook which sent taylor stumbling around in the 9th.
at the time he dropped his hands taylor was not throwing anything so there was no need to keep his arms up but when taylor started coming forward then abs would shell back up

How about stepping to the side and punching around the guard, maybe even through the middle but not at the guard, **** does anyone know anything about boxing on this forum. Winky's guard was seen as the ultimate defense a few years ago too, it wasnt neither is Abrahams

I noticed that too! He even had a look of discomfort when he would shake them!

Yeah, he often does that. But did you notice any loss of power the OP was referring to? :think
