Donald Curry v Lloyd Honeyghan

Did Honeyghan not run over and got Curry when he was sitting in the corner at the start of a round

 

remember it like it was this morning.curry was being mentioned as a future hagler opponent till he ran into the ragamuffin man.honeyghan jumped straight on him from the 1st bell like he owed him money.

 

that was johnny bumphus and gene hatcher.they both got the honeyghan treatment:twisted::twisted:

 

That was Bumphus, Bumphus had finished the 1st round in bad shape and Duva tried to stretch the minutes rest. The bell rang, the ref wasn't on the ball and Honeyghan ran over and had a go at Bumphus as he was sat in his corner with Duva.

 

Until Leonard and Honeyghan spoiled the party most people were thinking that Hagler would close out his career with a Hearns rematch and a fight with Curry.

Except that Curry was never "comfortable" making weight to begin with, so people making that argument are basically referring to a non-existent entity. There was always talk of Curry struggling to make weight for his fights, but it's only because he unexpectedly lost here that it's suddenly given credence this time. If he had happened to lose 2 years earlier people would've said then that the weight making had "caught up" with him. That was always going to be his excuse the first time he lost.

Curry is one of those fighters that people really bend over backwards making excuses for, for some reason. After he moved up from 147, everyone said "Now that he's not weight drained, he's going to clean out 154." Then he gets upset again by McCallum, and people said, "Well, that was just a lucky punch." Then late he got upset again by that French guy, and people started saying, "Well, he's been shot since before the Honeygan loss," which is absolutely absurd. It seems that a lot of people just won't acknowledge his limitations as a fighter.

 

Just because he was never comfortable making weight doesn't it always had the same impact on his performance though.Usually these things get progressively worse.

Curry may have faded badly or looked suspect against different opponents in the previous fights he was in if they had gone on longer, or been more talented\tougher stylistically.McCrory and that other guy(Rodriguez?) especially, he looked more like he was trying just to walk through the opposition and end things as quickly as possible rather than the more patient approach he had previously displayed.His defence and balance were questionable in the last one especially.

Personally i don't think Honeyghan's win should be dismissed at all, but i also tend to see Curry looking out of sorts and off-balance from the opening bell...he did look drained and i don't care for him that much as a personal favourite.On the other hand don't think that Curry was just going to lose to any oild welter contender like some have said over the years.It's a Leonard vs Hagler situation in a way...sure marv was past his best, but it was still going to take a damn good fighter to eventually beat him, even if Leonard had not got there.Curry coiuld have gone on for a few years against the Rodriguez's of the world , or stylistically favourable fighters like plodding textbook puncher Jones.

 

Honeyghen was a fast brawler who could cut the ring off and throw combos with good speed and power. That's the kind of fighter Curry always had trouble against. It happened with Terry Norris too, though he was not in his prime.

 

It was obvious to me Curry was not himself from bell one. This, allied to the fact Honeyghan was much much better than people realised was all, she wrote.

 

that's becuz Lloyd was in his face punching holes thru his head. This isnt Colin Jones we're talking about! lloyd was my type of fighter, never giving the boxer a chance to think, catch his breath, or in the case of bumphus, a chance to get off his stool

 

Must've killed you when your boy Starling tore him a new azzhole..........................Prime for prime Curry was twice the fighter Honeyghan was.

 

It was Duva and Bumphus' fault, protect yourself at all times once the bell rings. Lou was experienced enough to check on any local rules; in this case, no buzzer to signify 10 seconds before seconds out...
