unless your blind as a bat or dumb as a bag of hammers (probably the latter) he just answered your questions and more. VK barely gets hit because the vast majority of the competition he has faced are terrible boxers. sam peter, chris arreola, gomez??? your really gonna make an argument about VK's masterful defense against THESE people??
Probably: Muhammad Ali Lennox Lewis George Foreman Maybe, but unlikely: Joe Louis Larry Holmes Mike Tyson Jack Johnson Sonny Liston Highly unlikely: Joe Frazier Evander Holyfield Jack Dempsey Rocky Marciano Jim Jeffries
He might APPEAR the best because you are judging him against B grade opposition. He never beat a top level fighter in his entire career. He might not look quite so good against top grade opposition, and infact his loss to an old and heavy Lewis hinted at that. It's a bit like claiming Kessler was one of the greatest of all-time because he dominated B grade fighters hardly losing a round. But you know, then he meets Calzaghe.
Look, I would gladly agree with you. Just give me some examples. One, two perhaps... Surely out of 40 fights you can find some bits and pieces where Vitali was outboxed, outjabbed, overpowered, outmanuvered, etc. for more than one round. Regarding Tyson, he had unmatched upper body movement when he was 18, but a mental midget unfortunately. You knew that he was beat bad in sparring with Lewis, in 1988, did you? Enjoy
An old and heavy Lewis true. But it's not like Vitali was at the top of his game either. He took that fight on what, 2 weeks notice? I respect both fighters massively and believe that prime Lewis beats prime Klit 7/10 or 8/10 times. But given just how damn good Lewis was, then that isn't saying much bad about Vitali - after all he didn't exactly suck in his fight against a guy that people are ranking in their top ten or even top five ATG heavies. So using your example, let's say Calzaghe was unmotivated and a bit out of shape. Let's say Kessler took the fight on 2 weeks notice. Let's say that instead of being clearly UD'd that Kessler was actually ahead and got stopped on cuts... That would make it a bit more unclear, wouldn't it? There wasn't much room for question marks after JC took care of Kess. But there are still question marks about Lewis and Vitali.
Listen, based purely on H2H suspicions, I'd say Vitali would have a good chance to beat any other champion in history. But as far as what's actually been accomplished, who's actually been beaten, Vitali's career accomplishments don't even come close to Louis, Lewis, Ali, Foreman, Holyfield, etc, etc, etc. Sorry. He'd have to beat Valuev, Haye, his own brother, Solis, Chambers and Povetkin just to be seriously compared to these guys via actual accomplishment. Vitali is great but it is what it is.
It would make what unclear? It couldn't be any clearer that Kessler isn't and wasn't one of the greatest of all-time. Same goes for Klitschko, he's never beaten a single great fighter and the only one he fought he lost to, even under the circumstances. Did he fight well? Yes. But still, are we supposed to call him the GOAT or a great fighter based on that?
JC clearly and without any caveats simply beat Kess. The Lewis/Klit fight has so many ifs, buts and maybes that it is still being debated to this day and probably will be for years to come. So people will be clearer on where Kess stands overall as a fighter than they are about where Vitali stands. If the JC/Kessler fight had of had similar circumstances, enviroment and outcome to the Lewis/Klit fight then it would have made Kessler's standing more unclear now.
