One of the best supermiddleweight ever! also one of the best british middleweights, was a warrior who had a cast iron chin, and style that was hard to look good against
Joe calzaghe still says eubank was his hardest fight, and that was a short notice eubank, he tuck the fight on 2 or 3 weeks notice
Chris was a world class fighter but never nearly as good as Jones or as good as Toney, McCallum, Hopkins. He had some serious talents, ATG strength/chin/heart, good speed, good countering skills, good radar, very good power but poor textbook form and footwork He was also famously in it only for the money saying he dispised the sport.
What a character, he's been on interviews since retirement talking about his 'man who everybody loved to hate' persona and said something like, 'what you didn't realise at the time was, i entertained you'. I don't reckon he despised boxing though, too much of a warrior, he must have had a weird love for the sport deep down inside.
I disagree. His punching technique was excellent, and his footwork could be very shifty and effective given the right opponent. He just wasn't good at leading.
Wasnt he saying he despised it after the Watson coma incident? I always used to think at the time he tried not to KO opponents after that but Im not sure now, could be wrong. He certainly is a character and a half.
I just used to love how he'd shift a bit to the side, to create an opening he could exploit, then put his whole life, soul, sweat and tears into a right hand in an attempt to close the show there and then. Warrior.
He made plenty of rookie mistakes like loading up with a looping right missing and not following up with a left hook when he missed. His punching technique could be very good, allot of the time it could be horrible technique too. His footwork/movement left him off balance sometimes
Yeah it's a thing that gets talked about often when Eubank comes up, and a bit of a public opinion, that he seeemed to maybe not go in for the kill as you might have expected him to, after the Watson tragedy. I'm not sure when he said the 'despise' thing actually.
That looping right you mentioned, that's what i meant in post 26. To his credit though it was a clever shot in terms of positioning, he was gambling with it (meaning it might miss), but he wasn't really leaving himself open imo.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jklzql4MPPg[/ame] Maybe my favourite bit of Eubank footage on youtube. It's just an early fight against a can, but you gotta love those uppercuts. Another note about Eubank is he is probably one of the last fighters to use good napoles influenced head and upper body movement\slips for defence. That's really something that's faded over the past two decades.
