Been watching a few Nigel Benn fights. Guy was awesome. His early career knockouts over DeWitt, Barkley and Simms were especially impressive, and show what a monster he was at middleweight. However, he was also very fortunate that his second fight against Mauro Galvano didn't last 10 seconds longer. If it had, I think there is a good chance that the light punching Italian would have stopped him. I just watched the fight this morning and was really surprised at how it ended as I'd never heard anything about him being out on his feet at the end of it. He caught two right hands as he was ploughing forward in the dying seconds and looked absolutely gone. Luckily the bell rang before Galvano could follow up. The way he sagged into the ropes, though, remeinded me a bit of the Eubank stoppage. Then again, he almost always fired back from that position so it's impossible to know for sure. But he looked in pretty bad shape to me. Does anyone remember it?
it wasn't the first or last time benn got tagged.benn was always on the front foot and it was inevitable he was going to get caught.
short post fleaman but spot on,if there had been another ten seconds benn could well of dropped galvano with a from the floor punch just like logan. never more dangerous than when he was hurt benn
De Witt floored him too after the Logan fight and before the Galvano one. He was dropped by Logan, De Witt, Mclellon, and Malinga He was badly rocked by Barkley, Eubank, Mauro Galvano and Danny Perez
Benn was an animal, and he had the "wounded/cornered animal" instincts in the ring, never more dangerous than when he was hurt badly.
Benn put himself on offer and at times you get buzzed and hurt. Look at Froch last week with Dirrell getting hit clean with a shot and buzzed. Aggressive fighters will always have times when there hurt...just some play poker face better then others. When you look at it deeper....Benn knew he could be hurt but still went to war....Warrior!!!!
It's easy to have a poker face when your legs are ok though, when your brain gets rattled and you start stumbling on the spot and feel like you're about to collapse at any moment, it's a lot harder to hit back. Which is why trainers start shouting "GRAB ON! HOLD! CLINCH!" Benn was one of the strange ones who could actually KO you easier when he was hurt than he could when he was clear headed.
or a tough mofo like eubank, that man took some serious shots. like everyone said, benn was like a cornered beast when hurt,he got hurt in a lot of fights, the barkley fight sticks in my mind as well, although not floored he hurt benn:bbb
Exactly, i remember watching this live, i think Benn came into the ring dressed in tartan cos i was in Scotland, And when this happened, I wasnt in the least bit worried for him, i was half expecting a bomb from him to KO Galvano.
Benn never had a great chin. But he came back from being hurt more times than almost any fighter I can name. Watch the Logan fight from early in his career and it sets the blueprint that went right the way through to Mclellan. He is the classic wounded lion of boxing. Also he had a habit of bending at the kness sometimes to get low in defense, maybe at the end of a fight it looks like sagging. So in all truth its very hard to say. Fights though have a set time. Like Bute Andrade if the guy is standing at the final bell he finishes the fight.
