Fights of the Decade(s) - 1960's - 2000's?

Not sure about a 1960s list, but Archie Moore-Yvon Durelle 1 from the late 50s is my best fight before the 1970s, and in my top 4 all-time.

1970s: Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier 3

Runner up: Matthew (Franklin) Saad Muhammad-Marvin Johnson 1

1980s: This is a tough one. It would any 2 of the following:

Matthew Saad Muhammad-Yaqui Lopez 2
Aaron Pryor-Alexis Arguello 1
Bobby Chacon-Bazooka Limon 4
Bobby Chacon-Cornelius Boza Edwards 2

Not really sure what I think is the best and what's the runner-up.

1990s: Michael Carbajal-Humberto Gonzalez 1

Runner up: Julio Cesar Chavez-Meldrick Taylor 1, I guess. Tough to leave out fights like Barrera-McKinney, Robinson-Gatti 1, etc..

2000s: Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo 1

Runner-up: Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales 1

As you and Bill are on the subject: I think Chavez-Taylor is a great fight, one of the best of the 90s, but not quite one of my favourites ever. I can never decide if it is a truly great performance by Chavez to hang in there, keep working away and eventually getting the win, or a bad bad performance by him as he is effectively dominated for the vast majority of the 12 rounds.

 

I wouldn't contemplate putting Chavez vs. Taylor I anywhere near my top 10. It's great in hindsight, but as you watch it the whole fight is lacking drama up until the final 20 seconds. I'm not sure what my stance is regarding the stoppage - I would have had Taylor up by three points had Steele let it go for 2-3 more seconds. One of the most controversial calls in Boxing history, no doubt about it.

Watched Michael Carbajal vs. Humberto Gonzalez again today. Just a fantastic fight, hardly any clinches, just toe to toe, in fighting. Brilliant.
