Ok i have researched Fitzimmons and know about his career. Ive never really cared for matchups between turn of the century fighters and modern day fighters. Vitali would ko Fitz in 1 round. I have no doubt in my decision. Technique and fighters styles were so far behind compared to Now. In fact i think Bernard would stop Fitz in 8 to 10 rounds.

Vitali stops fitz. the number 7 cums 2 mind.
first i thought of 6 and then 8 , but 7 sounds good to me.
fitz against bernard is hard , bernard won't stop him , i don't know who wins.

I don't know much about Fitz, so help me out here. Who did he face that was as big as Vitali? I admit that I am limited for time at the moment so my research is limited to boxrec, I can only see one fight with a weight listed anywhere near as high as Vitali's...but it is more the height, reach and excellent command of distance that sets Vitali apart.

Also, I noticed someone mention that he had an iron chin, but I see that he has been KOed twice by middleweights. I am aware of the pitfalls of judging someone purely based on their paper record, which is why I request some help, but basing my opinions on my limited knowledge I fail to appreciate how a 6'8" 250lb world class HW who has KOed 37 of 38 much larger opponents would not be able to accomplish the same feat as two fairly unremarkable middleweights. I hope that does not sound too ignorant!:good

I must read up some more on Bob, since I cannot compare these fighters on skill at the moment (which is obviously a major flaw in any conclusions I draw) but I have a feeling that size may be too much of an issue here.

Hm, interesting match-up. When you look at the tale of the tape then there is only one answer and it´s Vitali wins. But if you look at their careers then some doubt will emerge. Still, Vitali is one of the worst possible match-ups for Fitz. He´s a bit like a bigger version of Jeffries - iron chinned, great stamina, good to great power, durable, athletic. I doubt Fitz wins this but I won´t count it out. He really was that good.

btw. Vitali isn´t an atg yet like somebody in this thread mentioned.

i have to agree with the majority of the posts. I've been reading up on Fitz since i picked frazier against him and i'll admit i'm impressed...but not impressed enough to ever pick him over vitali. fitz has skill, toughness and p4p punching on his side and vitali has everything else. to say that fitz could punch harder at 80 pounds less than vitali is a stretch to. vitali is no fred fulton...he's a giant with real skill and DAMN good power.

    vitali KO by 5

The more I read about Bob Fitzsimmons, the more respect I have for his abilities. But, I simply don't see how he would launch any kind of a meaningful attack on a fighter like Vitali Klitschko.

I have a hard time seeing the uber-great Fitzsimmons taking this one. But I do think a Fitzsimmons, if he came along in our day, would have a chance of winning the heavyweight title against the right sort of champion, if he (very feasibly) turned out to be a bit bigger guy and got even into the high 190's. If you get apollacks new Jeffries book :good ('In the Ring with James J. Jeffries') read his coverage of Fitzsimmons-Ruhlin -- Fitz gave a good heavy, quite a bit larger than himself, a brutal beating and knocked him WAY out.
