Wilfred Benitez vs 90's/ 00's

I don't think Benitez would beat any of those fighters easily in my opinion, he was one of the greatest on defense but was not offensively diverse.

Even fighters like Tito and Mosley give Benitez fits even though both Tito and Mosley always got beat by elite fighters who decided to box against them. I think De La Hoya who's one of the most diverse welterweights of the past two decades would give Benitez alot to think about in there, Pernell as well of course.

 

I dont see him having any issues at all with Mosley and Cotto. Especially Cotto what do you see them brining to the table thats going to really trouble El Radar?

Tito suits him because he will be pushed on the defensive and it will be at range, where he is at his best. He would have to be on his game but he wont really have to open to much against a generally fairly picky stalker like Tito who will just follow him around looking for openings that arent there.

For different reasons Floyd and Hoya arent cakewalks for him...but I dont see him losing either.

 

Benitez had problems with speedy guys with fast jabs, the 2 that beat him though were 2 of the best WWs ever but they did it very decisively. I see Mayweather/Delahoya/Mosley/Whitaker giving him problems for this reason. I see Whitaker definately winning, Mayweather winning, DLH/Mosley Im not so sure about

Cotto I see making it a hard fight but losing, Tito may well get schooled

 

I definitely agree that it should be the FAB 5. Benitez was awesome on his day.

Cotto.....................Benitez By wide UD
Mayweather............Benitez wins competive UD, more proven than Floyd.
De La Hoya.............Benitez By clear UD.
Whitaker.................50-50 match here.
Trinidad..................Benitez schools and humiliates Tito.

 

That is really boiling it down to something ridiculously simple.

None of these guy mentioned are even close to Leonard or Hearns. Those guys bring a hell of a lot more then just speed and a jab. To say Benitez has problems with all guys who simply possess a jab and are fast is complete bollocks. Duran was not slow, and had an excellent jab. Guys like Villa and Shields could very well fit into this category aswell.

Shane is very fast but his jab isnt very good, he more flicks it out on the double to find range for his flurries or right hand. His lack of overall skill and defense is going to hurt him.

Mayweather just hasnt been impressive above 140...Very good but not the kind of great fighter he was. I cant see any evidence to suggest he will beat Benitez when an ancient Hoya gave him trouble. But I do feel at the very least he is hard going simply because he is so solid defensively. Offensively though, he just doesnt do enough to trouble of a lot of the very best at this weight. Benitez included, who I wouldnt put up there with the top tier h2h at welter.

As for Hoya..I think this might be the hardest fight for Wilfred outside of Pea. But at the same time Oscar's stand up style looked greatly troubled by a silky smooth but coked up Pea. Wilfred chopped up guys like that and on a level playing field with out the 2 round Goldenboy handicap I certainly see Wilfred edging this one. I feel he was just a better fighter.

The thing is Bud is extremely smart and can adapt to anything.
But at jr.middle Benitez seemed to be much stronger and had underrated strength.

Wilfred Benitez vs Donald Curry at 147 would have been very interesting. Tough to call that one.

Curry was better than most of the ones mentioned above.

I think he’d do pretty well against Cotto.

Mayweather and Whitaker would outskill him and were sharper.

Tito, Oscar, and Mosley had too much firepower and were bigger and stronger than he was.

 

Has Crawford even defeated a fighter as good as Prime Mosley? Serious question.
