In a heavyweight top 10 that is.

I get the feeling it's just about completely unreasonable from this boards perspective to have him outside of a top ten. He's definitely very appreciated on these boards.

    Thoughts?

    I'd say about 6, 7.

Ali and Louis should always be ranked above him, but other than those two there's no other guy who has a great case to be ranked above him. Cases can be made for Liston, Tyson, Holmes, Marciano being higher but they're all roughly in the same grouping in my view. If you rank all these guys above Lennox than you have him at 7, which is a bit low in my view.

I have him anywhere from 3-5. I go back and forth between him, Liston, and Tyson. Whether your list is head to head or pure resume, Lennox is near the top in both and that's not the case for all top ten HW's.

I couldn't justify ranking him above Holmes personally, I think 3 is just a little too generous for Lennox.

I don't like Holmes not fighting Thomas, Dokes, Page, or Coatzee and then not rematching Weaver and Spoon.

That puts him down a notch in my view.

Ali, Louis, Johnson, and Holmes have rather firm footing in my top 4. Tyson at 10, and Holyfield at 9, are pretty much set for now. I currently rank Lewis at 5, but can't see any way to have him below 8.

    Ali
    Louis
    Johnson
    Holmes
    Lewis
    Marciano
    Foreman
    Frazier
    Holyfield
    Tyson

I like Lewis' resume more than Holmes'.

I think the lowest you can have Lewis is 7 or 8.

I really can't picture rating him much lower than perhaps 5. An argument might be doable for about 6-7, based on his losses to McCall and Rahman, but that's about it. The man was a two time olympic medalist, who spent the bulk of his career fighting rated contenders/champions, and ultimately retired having beaten every man he ever shared a ring with....

I personally have him right around # 4..

    Lowest to me would be:

Ali, Louis, Foreman, Johnson, Dempsey, Marciano, Holyfield, Frazier, Liston, Tyson could all make a case of being ranked

higher, throw out the a few and the lowest ends up being about 8-9th, highest 3rd.

Personally, I go back and forth between him and Holmes for 3rd and 4th position.

And you also have to take into account how he was avoided by many of the top boxers like the plague. He made the most of what his career presented to him.

I'm not a huge Lewis fan, as there are a couple of things about him that I am skeptical of, but credit where it's due...

    I have him at 3 or 4.

Depending upon criteria, your read of the chin, your feelings on his prime losses to fighters who are not in his class and how highly you rank problematic losses amongst your criteria.

For example, in his prime years Liston lost to Ali twice, ranked #1 or #2 near-universally. Lewis lost two two men who do not make the top fifty. If you stress losses Lewis has very damaging losses during his title years. But you must stress losses consistantly in that case.

I don't object to seeing him at 8 or 9 depending upon read. What i've noticed is that people who rank him lower than that generally do not have consistent criteria, so they will deduct points from him for failing to meet the top HW's he shared the era with (Tyson, Bowe) but don't penalise Dempsey, for example, in the same way.

Never been a fan of Lennox', but he is one of the very greatest ever in my opinion. The most subjective aspect about boxing is probably assessing greatness so i understand differences in opinions, but i can't see that he isn't one of the greatest personally, sure you can look at the nature of the losses, which is the only identifiable negative spot for me. With all fighters i don't rate them on what they didn't do, ie Lewis fought past prime greats, not prime ones, or Robinson didn't fight Burley. I can only look at what they did do and how great they WERE, what could have been or what they didn't do does not detract for me. It might be a shame or whatever that certain things didn't happen for certain fighters, or you can lose respect for certaing fighters ducking certain fighters, but that's a different topic and doesn't have a bearing on identifiable greatness in my opinion.

For me Lennox had a fine career. People may look at the lack of prime great fighters on the resume, but he has a lot of good wins over the best of the era and contenders, that sort of thing makes for a great resume if it's done consistently and top wins are added, he has a legitimate win over Vitali, and he was a damn fine fighter and a nightmare proposition for a lot of foes.

One of the greatest for me, don't like him a bit though, how badly i wanted Tyson to ruin him.
