Joe Bugner was on the cusp of being a Super Heavyweight himself. 6'4, 220 pounds against Frazier and he looked good even 20 pounds north of that weight.

Bugner was more skilled then Vitali, and more then likely not much less durable if any less durable at all. Vitali has hardly been in with the comp that Bugner was tested against. Bugner got up from a Shaver's uppercut, the caliber of shot that knocked Jimmy Ellis out in one round.

A Frazier who should have long since retired, who had no killer instinct in the actual fight, dropped the ultra durable Bugner with a single bodyshot.

Beyond all that, Vitali does not like pressure. Neither Klitschko does.

Arreloa was pressuring him (Looking like an amateur in the process at that) and Vitali was literally turning his back and running away. He did the same thing when Sander's came after him.

Both brothers absolutely thrive off of imposing themselves, almost exclusively using their size to do this.

Guess what happens when one of the greatest pressure fighters of all time starts getting under those lazy Vitali jabs?

 

Very good points. Vitali has been somewhat troubled by much lesser pressure fighters than Joe Frazier, and although his knockout ratio is good, I don't believe Vitali can knockout Joe with one shot. Sam Peter, hurt by McCline, walked through everything he had. Arreola, hurt by journeyman Travis Walker, also walked through everything Vitali had. I've been forced to reconsider. Frazier certainly has the ability to cut off the ring and get inside on Vitali, and bang to the body, which is what Joe should focus on in my opinion. Throw three shots, two the body and one upstairs.

Vitali is a hurtful puncher, not a knockout puncher. Most of his KO's are painful to watch affairs where he grinds the other guy out of there.

Sander's said that he had bruises and damage inside of his ears after he fought Vitali. That basically sums it up.

Its obvious Vitali is no Foreman, any which way you want to cut it.

So its really irrelevant whether or not Vitali could duplicate a knockdown, he isn't putting Joe away. One way or another Joe is going to start smoking, and Vitali is going to get going. :happy

But..but..highest knockout ratio ever? Kidding, that was my novice impression of the Klitschko fans that pretty much run things in the General.

 

It seems to be contraversial whenever i pick Frazier to brutalise Wladimir Klitschko, or when i see Robinson definitely stopping Hearns, both very reasonable to me.

The one that causes more contraversy is that i see Trinidad's chances against Hearns, rather not get in that to much now, an old debate.

Great points man. Love the emphasis on Arreola pressuring him at .002 mph with Vitali actually turning his back and running away at one point.

For Bugner, Frazier hit him with a vicious left hook to the head, not body that dropped him. Just to correct that.

I know he made the ultra tough Quarry take a knee from a bodyshot. Quarry was one of the hardest ****ers to ever lace up the gloves.

Get this - Frazier ALSO made Chuvalo turn his back and walk away. George Chuvalo, cited as having one of the greatest chins of all time.

I don't give a **** if his cheekbone was broken, Frazier made George Chuvalo quit.

Frazier would grind you down and out until he was, or you were dead. You absolutely could not outwill the man, and someone like Vitali would wither under that kind of pressure.

Good stuff chaps, some interesting calls. I like the calls on Williams (over Duran etc), Buchanan (Ortiz, Armstrong) and Conteh (Foster) especially. Then again, I'm biased, but **** it.

Cheers mate. I genuinely think he would have outmanoevred JMM and EM; they were never too smart against skilled counterpunchers. Barrera would be a harder task though; he tended to do well against boxers when he could control the pace.

And I think that Conteh would have pushed Foster, especially the Ahumada version, to the brink. Bob was aggressive and hittable which could have played into Conteh's hands. Then again, this is Foster we're talking about........
