He can beat Abraham, but he won't. The problems with Dirrell are mental, he doesn't back himself to engage with other fighters if there is a chance of being hit in return and with that in mind, he's always going to be at a disadvantage when his style is the way it is.
....unless he does. Seriously, after seeing him against Froch I think he has a decent chance. AA won't apply the same type of pressure so I think Dirrell will be able to pick his shots better and won't have to evade nearly as much. May have to evade better, but not as much.
His issue is going to be fearing being hit, again. If the guy could get past that, back himself to engage with fighters and use the movement to set up his offense, rather than completely negate it, he would have the potential to be a very robust threat to anyone from 160-175. But at this stage in his career to still be fighting that way, especially when he must have known he had the upper hand in ability against his opponent, it's just worrying, he's too timid, reminds me of Mundine in a way.
dirrell's talent is still so untapped. he has so much unrealized potential still that one day, he may be able to dance around a fighter like aa, (and froch) all night and not get caught and not have to hold on or run. i think he could still do it today...but its a tall order for him. we'll see though. i don't think saying dirrell has a decent chance is exaggerating anything or a slap at aa at all.
I'm not saying it's gonna be easy . . . but I'm not expecting Dirrel to suddenly become a bangger and stay flat footed in front of AA. If Dirrel gets caught by AA . . . it could be lights out.
Like Landshark said, AA won't come forward on anyone that demonstrates an ability to hurt him. If Dirrell opens up with round 9, post point deduction, this fight stays in the center of the ring where it favors his speed.
to me, dirrells opening up in the later rounds was the most surprising part of the froch fight. i knew dirrell had the ability to outbox froch (that aint saying much though), yes he did run a lot and hold on. but what really raised my eyebrow was the fact that he had froch genuinely hurt. i didnt think that would happen. now, thats a product of one of two things. either dirrell has more power than i gave him credit for before the fight, or froch doesnt have as good of a chin as was made out to be. maybe a little of both?? either way, i'll be interested to see what dirrell can do to aa as far as deterring him from moving forward. but yes i agree, dirrell's speed could be a major factor in this fight if he gets a chance to use it to his advantage.
Andre Dirrell has some serious talent, speed, reflexes, movement and varied punch selection to bother Abraham. However, the Froch fight showed he's far from being a complete fighter or ready to take on the very best. He really needs to improve his balance and work on the defense, because both will be tested bigtime. Abraham is not the Roy Jones type of flashy, speedy stylist, but he's very good taking away your offense, speed and power and getting some nasty shots back. He's not wild, he mixes up wild and straight shots therefore he's unpredictable. He's not a brawler, he's a smart fighter mixing up the right punches, going to the head, body, etc, taking you apart. He might be open for counters when on the attack, but he fights off-rhythm and you don't see too many brave fighters throwing counters when AA's about to rip your head off. It doesn't only take a special fighter to beat Abraham, and I believe Andre has a lot of skills and natural talent to cause AA major troubles. But it also takes a very tough, 110% focused, defensively very sound, iron chinned fighter to survive everything Abraham throws at you at underrated speed and well-documented power. Does Dirrell have the toughness, punch resistence, focus, mental strength and all that overlooked part of the game? We'll find out, but the Froch fight is not the best sign entering an Arthur Abraham contest.
Honestly from looking at some of the Lajuan Simon fight and in a couple round's of the Taylor fight, Arthur Abraham has problem's with speed. So to say Dirrell has no chance is idiotic.
I think fighting AA would be a bit like chopping down a tree that can chop back! You have to keep chopping without taking to much damage yourself. Give a fighter a height and reach advantage, good chin, heavy hands, some ability to think on his feet, patients, and a good work rate, and AA gets knocked out. Dirrell does not fit that bill. Dirrell did better against Froch than I thought he would, but he still proved what I've said from the beginning. He's in over his head in this tourney, and his management did him a great dis-service by allowing him to enter. He shoud be fighting guys like Manfredo and Brinkley. Not trying to operate at this level.
Yep! Dangerous fight for AA! Gainer and Ayala made the water hot for AA,and so did Gevor. Move, hit, and run! If Dirrel sticks to his gameplan and is focused throughout his entire encounter with AA he may be able to upset AA. I wont bet a single coin on Froch against AA,but Dirrel has a slight chance to upset the apple cart IMO.
