Mikkel Kessler has recently arrived in Sacramento. Already I have heard word that he has reached out towards the bay area as far as Vallejo looking for possible sparring partners. Finding sparring partners to prepare him for Ward in a few weeks is going to be a difficult task, even in Ward's stomping grounds of Northern California. Northern California has many boxers to choose from for Kessler who you could consider somewhat decent. A couple fighters in the area are even exceptional with a shot at stardom. However, none are anywhere near the level of Ward. On top of that, it will be much easier for Ward to find sparring partners to simulate Kessler than it will be for Kessler to find sparring partners to simulate Ward. It is not a bad idea at all for Kessler to seek local sparring in the area he will soon be fighting in. Unfortunately, a good number of them have a loyalty to Ward. Still, I believe Ward will be looking beyond the area for his sparring. Hopefully for Kessler, he has or will be doing something similar soon.
Not if he doesn't know about it. Something tells me it's pretty unlikely that he's reading this thread either. The fighters out of the Wild Card Gym won't help anymore than the fighters around Sacramento and the bay area.
Last I heard he was sparring a Lithuanian nobody in Germany. It is somewhat concerning the sparring he is getting, or not getting as the case may be. It's crucial considering Mikkel has not fought at the top level for a long time, he needs high class sparring and I'm doubtful whether he's getting it. I personally don't rate his trainer and never have, he never inspires me with confidence that training is perfect.
I know exactly where he should look...but he's going to have to figure that one out for himself. He could have landed in worse places than Sacramento, but he sure as hell could have landed in a better place.
Yeah the best boxer at the moment is training their and he wouldn't know about it. Its only a 30 minute flight from Sacto to LA. And last time I check LA has produced some pretty good fighters. Shane Mosley Oscar DelaHoya Just to name a few. Plenty of talent in that city for Kessler to spar with. The Bay Area is more of MMA city anyway. LA is a boxing city.
Since when thus weight class matter in sparring. I've sparred with Heavyweights and Lightweights at the gym for crying out load. You don't need to find an exact duplicate in sparring. Just someone that can mimic you opponents strengths.
You're right about sparring out of your weight class, no doubt. Often it can even be better. But let's get more specific...name names, other than De Lay Hoya and Mosley, because he will not be landing them as sparring partners anytime soon, though Mosley would make sense both ways.
Well their is Linbrado Andrade who was born in Mexico. But grew up in LA county if your looking for a Supermiddleweight. Mikkel Kessler and him should know each other. And of course Vargas is a middleweight.
Sparring Vargas to prepare for Ward would be a terrible idea and would only throw off Kessler's timing, similar to a Major League baseball player joining a softball league during the season. I don't see how Kessler and Andrade would spar each other either. EVER. Haven't they fought before? Couldn't they possibly fight again? Sparring between these two is NOT going to happen.
