Jones Jr, Ray Robinson, Hopkins would outbox them and maybe Burley/Greb/Marshall/Charles/Holman Williams who I haven't seen enough of at 160. Leonard beat Hagler and may have beaten Prime Hagler and Monzon. Peak Toney would be even money with both and clearly has better skills. Nunn would be a nightmare for both
Well, imo it´s the opposite Hagler is a bit overrated. He definitly was a great mw, Top5 for sure but he was beatable. A fight between him and Monzon would be a 50/50 thing. I slightly lean to Monzon but just beause he always found a way. For me, Monzon, Hagler, Greb, Robinson and Hopkins should be mentioned in the same breath, well, we could include Walker aswell I think, when we are talking about mw greats. Any of them could win or lose to another it would be 50/50 in nearly every fight.
Why? Hagler had the greater starpower and was absolutely impressive. He also lost two fights as a contender against B - level fighters and was beaten by an inactive Leonard. I don't think Calzaghe would lose to anyone of Hagler's record. Not sure how Hagler would fare against a 6'2 Kessler or Hopkins. For a direct matchup, consider that Calzaghe was the same height as Hearns, but with an iron chin. He certainly wouldn't have been blown out early and a long fight is always difficult with Calzgahe, Hagler certainly never faced a speed - workrate combination like Joe's. I see this as a close fight that could go either way, which doesn't take away from Hagler's greatness.
Hagler is top 4 at 160 ,and a strong case can be made for putting him at no 1,anyone who has him below 5 at middle, is to be viewed with caution,imo.
You have no chance to beat a prime Hagler unless you're the bigger man. I would make Monzon a slight favorite, but it would be close to flipping a coin, Hopkins is a 50/50 fight as well, and he is a decent favorite (7-4) over Robinson. For what it's worth, I was probably the 'idiot' that picked Calzaghe over him, who is a 6-4 fav over him at 168 in my opinion, though Hagler is, of course, a better fighter. Fast feet, funky rythm, lot of workrate and a good chin -- Calzaghe's specific qualities are hell for a lot of fighters, and I feel Hagler is one of them. The times Hagler wins he mostly gets the TKO, I feel.
LOL, get the **** outta here. Toney's not in the same league as Hagler. Nunn? Toney? You're leaving out intangible components that can't be measured like heart and determination. What skills does Toney have better than Hagler? You must be mighty impressed with a shoulder roll. Prime Hagler's movement and fluidity are greatly underrated.
Hagler never had a particularly good defense, he often relied on walking through shots (in his prime too). Toney just has better technique across the board. Hagler has the better determination/stamina/achievements/consistancy, he may outwork Toney but at his best Toney may well outbox him fr period, to point this out on here is sacreligous but it makes perfect sense. Nunn would also outbox him for periods and would be a nightmare. I can certainly see Hagler turning up the pressure on both men and edging out close decisions, people pretend he'd be able to dominate either man People worship successful fighters and ignore their flaws
