The list is shockingly shite. Having Jack Dempsey 15 places higher than Ezzard Charles is probably the most horrifying error, but there are many in that abortion of a list.

I think I would rank Jones somewhere around 30th, maybe late twenties.

Based on ability alone I would have him top 15, as the Roy Jones of 1993-2003 (specifically 94-96 at smw) was one of the most effective fighters ever. His resume is good considering his era, but it is not great, hence the drop to around 30th in pound-for-pound terms.

88 is way too high for a guy who made a living beating up on part time sanitation workers, plumbers and police officers. When he did step up he brutally got ko'd (Johnson/Tarver) or his ass whooped (Calzaghe).

I agree with this. H2H you could count on a few fingers the fighters with a big chance to beat him, but in greatness terms he's gotta drop a good deal. 30-40 for me.

It's funny - I think I rate him lower than you head to head but higher than you on the ATG scale. Pretty mentalist.

Depends on if you rate accomplishments vs H2H by weight class. The thing is, I think Jones Jr rates highly in both, it's just we tend to overrate the past, especially since there was only 1 belt, and too pretend their wasn't as much politics to belts (and unworthy title fights) in the past as there is now is just asinine. We romanticize the past with every sport, but mostly with Baseball and Boxing.

Football we know most guys in the past couldn't play today, actually most old-timer NFL HOF'ers couldn't even make a practice squad these days. Same with basketball. Wilt Chamberlin wouldn't be Wilt Chamberlin today, but Jordan would still be Jordan.

I think it has more to do with the fact that in Baseball and Boxing guys are roughly the same size as in the past, and the games haven't changed much in the last 100 years. NFL players and NBA players are all bigger, stronger, faster, quicker. Not so much with boxing, but I still argue the top guys today are a little quicker, stronger, and faster than they are given credit for H2H.

Maybe Roy never winning a lineal title carried weight in Bert's list more.
