I love the fact that Calzaghe often took on fighters the very fight after they were robbed by Ottke and beat them convincingly just to point out to Ottke who the real man at the weight was. Ottke never wanted Calzaghe cause he knew Calzaghe would knock him senseless.
I thought Ottke lost the Brewer (1st ) fight clearly and an argument could go either way for the return. He lost the Reid fight. Its been a while but i recall thinking he lost a few others as well. He was a decent boxer , but lucky he was German, his style bored the hell out of most people.
I agree. Though Ottke fans used to say that Calzaghe used to feast on his left overs. (complete bollocks). His manager actually once said 'Calzaghe is a fighter that only fights someone two years after everyone else faught them.' Not sure how that worked with Reid though.
Larsen beat Ottke as he scorred more points that Ottke 10 out of 12 rounds. However, German viewers were used to collectively thinking "if he didn't dominate Ottke.. then Ottke won the round". And so Ottke 'won' some rounds. Ottke was a runner and almost impossible to dominate - as he would just run, and if that wasn't enough he would complain to the ref. Despite all of this he could be beaten and he was several times, but given his style he was never dominated.
Ottke's strategy was running for 80% of the round, and then engage for the remaining 20% in his "flurry of punches" with ZERO power and terrible accuracy. It looked good for the audience when Ottke let lose 10 punches but in slow-motion you would see that NOTHING hit. Nothing. Ottke has the worst accuracy of any fighter I have ever seen (minus that one-punch KO of Mundine).
His "no accuracy" was a plan. Look at his fights, he always uses his right hand not to hit the hand but the left arm of his opponents, especially in the early rounds. And because of this the workrate of the left arm of his opponents drop significantly throughout the fight - and they aren´t able to protect themselves as good as before anymore. When he needs to he could punch hard and accurat, Look at the Mundine fight that was no lucky punch it was set up. You don´t know what you are looking at, mate.
Ottke was talented, no doubt. It's easy to dismiss him as he WAS beaten on 2 or 3 occasions, but he was definitely a decent fighter. I wonder if the gift decisions ever hurt his pride, or if he was deluded himself. Admittedly the Reid fight was possibly the biggest disgrace I've ever witnessed.
He needed to punch hard and accurate in most of his fights. This was very rarely seen though. I am not totally bashing him. He was skilled. This thread was purely saying that the undefeated record is pure BS.
This in my opinion is the best post yet. Totally goes along with how I feel. Would love to read that (non-existing) candid article where he says. 'Yeah I know I lost to Reid and some more, but man I made some wonga!'
You could include Dirrell in the same sentence as Ottke,he`s a moaning little ***** like Ottke was.Better fighter though, got to admit.
Lets not lie good man !!! MItchell was stopped ala manfredo vs Joe hardly convincing at all !! Also joe said he would never fight in germany cause of corruption!! Then he went to germany and fought veit a guy he koed in rd 1 before. Joe just wouldnt fight Sven ottke there , ottke was the unified champ at 168lbs joe was a paper titlist most of his career the first belt holder he beat was lacy 10 years a champ my ass
Sorry mate thats not right at all. I f you really think mitchell could have stayed on his feet for 30 more seconds then your even more deluded than your above comments about calzaghe make you sound. Based on that I bet you were still cheering in the 12th for Lacy when the whole world including his own promoter was screaming for the fight to be stopped. Again the manfredo stoppage was early but again had you seen anything from manfredo to suggest anything other than him getting knocked out. Ottke had some skills but had no interest in that fight. Most of Calzaghe's fiercest critics would have no problem saying that he was far superior to Ottke.
