Could anything tempt Calzaghe out his well earned retirement?

    Eubank apparently got knocked over by a slap, and we all know Eubank had a glass jaw:patsch not forgetting those slaps cut RJJ face to shreds.

    You're absolutely right, many just wouldn't fight him, and sadly his hands became brittle, but he showed how skilled he was by outboxing people instead of relying on power.

    It shows how fickle the American public are when they paid more attention to him when he beat Manfredo than Woodhall, Reid or Eubank.

    Absolutely Spot on. Everytime he beat the next big thing out of the states (sheika,lacey) they suddenly became overhyped. And the one that makes me laugh is when people talk about Eubank being over the hill. Now don't get me wrong I know that the Watson thing massively affected him but come on HE WAS 31.

    Everyone talks like Byron Mitchell was **** as well but to me thats bull. Especially as he was just coming of a "win" against the """"""Great"""""" sven ottke!!!!!!

    Calzaghe is like Frank Lampard. Deep down everyone knows how good he is but for some reason people love to spout **** about him.

    You maybe right about the compubox stats.

    If that is the case, then I can only say that those are probably due to some grazing punches from Calzaghe that just slid off Hopkins or were blocked.

    I watched that fight many times and I have little doubt that Hopkins won that fight. He landed more cleaner and harder shots.

    Joe was more accurate, threw more, landed more jabs, more punches, and the killer to all this.....

    Actually the compubox stats also showed that Calzaghe massively had the edge on power shots as well.

    All hopkins did was spoil and headbutt!

    I think the whole Calzaghe lack of power thing is a bit of a mythe.

    He had to protect his hands. When he chose to pich his shots he could still bang.

    What fighter he ever faught said at the end of the fight, 'he doesn't punch hard' Not one. Normally their faces were much more marked up than his.

    Kessler didn't cite a lack of power at the end of the fight either. Joe hit him with some big shots.

    All the commentators on HBO and Setanta thought Joe won that Fight. HBO scored it 116-111, and Buncy, McGuigan, Woodhall all thought he won as did Jim Watt on Sky, Boxing Monthly, Bosing News and the ring magazine. The only commentator that I know that thought Hopkins won was Glenn McCrory but come on. Have you ever sat through watching him score on Friday night fights. He scores nearly every round even, so that is probably how he had Hopkins winning. I agree it was close but Joe just outworked him in tight rounds. It wasn't a good performance but then who has ever looked good against Hopkins. Apparently Joe retired because his kids didn't want him to fight anymore. Seems fair enough to me

    Good post.
    Also his dad had said that if he fights on he won't be in the corner. One of his boys in particular apparently used to get quite upset when he had a fight. I honestly do not know how anyone can score that fight to bhop, he was comical.

    As regards wheter Joe would come back or be tempted I doubt it. He already said the only real fight left was a rematch with Hopkins and he wont agree to that, due to Hopkins acting like such a dick after the fight. By the time Froch finishes this super six Joe would have been retired a long time and Froch has to get through, Kessler, Abrahams a semi and a final. Can't see him winning all those fights really. In fact can't see him winning the next 2 unless he lands something real big on Kessler and shocks him. Hes got the wrong style to beat Abrahams.

    I don't see Froch being the man to drag him out. The two biggest draws in the Super Six are Kessler and Abraham. If Kessler were to win then there is no way Calzaghe gets dragged out of retirement. However, if Abraham were to win and remain undefeated he is already a massive star in Europe and a well known name in America. That could potentially draw Calzaghe out of retirement, especially if Abraham were to beat Kessler in more convincing fashion than Calzaghe did. The fight could fill a stadium in either the UK or Germany, and garner massive ratings globally. Outside of that, I do not see any fight that could drag him out.

    Good point. I agree than kessler would not draw him out. I just think if Froch wins they are bound to be exciting wins and it would make him very saleable. Am yet to be convinced with AA, didn't see all that much against Jermain taylor.

    Retiring being a champ and undefeated is quite a feat but IMO breaking Marciano's record would be really great.

    And by the way, his win over Hopkins will always be an asterisk in his resume. Many thought Hopkins won that fight. _
