I'm eager to see this. Martinez is a bigger, better version of Quintana in a lot of ways. Southpaws, pretty slick, pretty fast; except Martinez can take punches better, is a stronger puncher, and is, a little more tricky and unorthodox. Williams looked greatly improved in the rematch against Quintana, but lets see how he does against Martinez. I like it!
I'm also glad it's going to be at 154 so Paul will have a chance to win a legitimate 154 pound strap, instead of the interim thing he won against Phillips.
What ever gave you that impression that PW would duck Martinez...after he faced Winky, AM, and Quintana...and signed on to face Pavlik who cancelled their fight?:huh
Great fight with a huge risk factor. Big respect for Williams who got f*cked once again, but he could pay a heavy price, Martinez is highly skilled, tricky and powerful, not easy to look good against him - not easy to beat him at all. Is this going to take place at 160 in a nontitle fight as reported? I'm usually against this jump up and down ****, but Williams said he did a lot of weight training for Pavlik, and cutting down the weight right after he put on can be very bad physically. Paul needs a MW fight in preparation for Pavlik. So hopefully, there will be an interim title on the line, because this is the reason interim titles were created - if the champ can't defend due to health reason. I'm happy for the fight, but if you're a Williams fan, you can start worrying right now, because Martinez is ain't no walk in the part. :yep
only thing i dont like about this **** is the lack of prep time.. but its all good it is what it is...
He'll have just over a month to prepare for a completely different style opponent in Martinez, so that's the biggest risk at this point and, as you've said, Martinez is no slouch. I give big props to both fighters for taking this fight on short notice- it's the best 154's got to offer, even if it's happening at 160.
:deal Martinez is one of the most overlooked guys I can think of. I don't understand it. Respect to both guys for taking this fight. It's not going to be easy for anybody in all likelihood.
Because PW is know for ranting about how he is avoided but u got Clottey Martinez and Dzurwhatever calling him out all the time and he never seems to respond to any of them only the big names that offer him alot of money.
Im glad this fight was made over the Clottey fight. Sergio deserves a big name/big payday. That said...Williams but clear but competative UD.
Wtf? Proved you wrong? Even if Williams didn't fight Martinesz, he could fight Dzin ( it would be a done deal but his former promoter won't let it happen) or if Clottey had a brain he would accept 650k to fight Williams (Clottey was already training to face Quintana so don't give no bull **** about short notice of training ok booradley?). I bet people forgot that Martinez was already in training when he was schedule to fight on the diaz vs paulie rematch undercard fight.
Cause Pavlik postponed the fight twice in a row so Williams team is tired of waiting for Pavlik to heal.
