I just read that Bert Sugar has Roy Jones 88th on his greatest fighters list

    Riko,

the bottom line is Spinks was willing to fight and beat THE Heavyweight Champion not some trinket beltholder like Ruiz.

Spinks beat an ATG Heavyweight twice while Roy opted to handpick one of the worst Heavyweight beltholders in the past 30 years.

Jones NEVER beat a unified, undisputed, or linear champion in his whole career. His resume compared to Robinson, Leonard, etc. is a complete joke. No way can he be mentioned with those people as a top 25 ATG with the line of guys he fought. Roy simply did not fight the best fighters available to him. The others did.

what I have realized is on this forum many of the Jones fan boys are only 18 years old and NEVER even saw him fight in his supposed Prime.

They just regurgitate what they have heard. Anyone who thinks Roy Jones was a better Light Heavyweight or Heavyweight than Mike Spinks is a delusional nuthugger. Spinks fought EVERYONE available to him including THE Heavyweight Champion. Roy fought a bunch of mandatory fights and off duty cops, bartenders, and sanitation workers at Light Heavyweight then hand picked John Ruiz at Heavyweight. What a joke.:rofl:patsch

Which was precisely my point, McGrain. :good Hopkins may have had some amateur fights prior to turning professional, but I think his stint in prison slowed his progression down as well. Hopkins still had to learn his trade really, and couldn't rely on physical gifts to get by at that early stage, like a Jones would for instance. Different styles.

Do you think Jones Jr beat better opposition at Light Heavyweight than Roy Jones Jr?

I would be interested in your detailed response to this post Rico:

Do you agree with me on Jones? Please elaborate on your position on the man's ability and p4p standing.

I am not going to read all of that right now I am about to leave for lunch but I will say this:

It seems Jones is judged on here by what he *could* have done or *would* have done had he fought some of the fighters available to him. It does not work that way people. While Leonard and Robinson etc. are judged on what they actually did in the ring. They took on everybody and then some Jones NEVER did this. Ever.

Jones simply does not have a complete body of work because he either refused to fight the fighters available to him or took the easy way out in handpicking fights ie: the Ruiz fight.

Mike Spinks had a better light heavyweight career and Heavyweight career than Jones and he is not even on the list yet the Jones nuthuggers complain about him being #88? How is that for irony?

Also this whole first to win a heavyweight belt in 100 years for someone who started at Middleweight is garbage. Why? Fitzsimmons beat THE Heavyweight champion Jones beat a paper beltholder he did not beat Lennox Lewis. It is not the same thing as what Fitzsimmons did. Not even close.

I am inclined to agree about Ruiz.

And Spinks had a far, far better resume at lightheavy, and at heavy (obviously), that much is true. But Jones won titles at middle and supermiddle, and beat Hopkins and Toney there too. I think there is an argument to be made either way for who should rank higher between Spinks and Jones, but I most certainly agree that a top 100 without Michael Spinks is a joke.

    Wow.

I'm of the opinion that RJJ is a bit overrated by a lot. But having him 88th is harsh even by my standards.

Then I'm sorry, but you don't know much about boxing my friend. If you can't see why Spinks's resume at 175 is far better than Jones's, I can't help you, you'll need to do a bit more reading, a bit more research, and watch some more fights. It's not even close - and I'm a Jones fan.

    Riko,

Jones was knocked cold by Tarver and also lost a Decision against him which he blamed on not wanting to win because his dad would have got the credit. He is 1-2 against Tarver. The fact that you list Clinton Woods to 'boost' Roy's resume is awful. McCallum was finished when Roy fought him.

Spinks was never brutally KOed twice at Light Heavyweight like Roy was. Spinks was willing to fight a Prime Tyson and Jones would not even fight the 2003 version of Tyson unless he got 50 million dollars.:rofl:patsch

Riko is my evil twin but he knows Boxing. I think he like a lot of people here just rate Jones on what they think he *could* or *would* have done not what he actually did. Jones does not have a resume to be compared to any top 25 or 30 fighter.
