Just watched this awesome display of talent by Michael Nunn, outclassing undefeated IBF Middleweight champion Frank Tate. Tate was an Olympic gold medalist and was considered a very good boxer himself, but then he came up against peak Nunn and was made to look like an absolute joke. The speed of Nunn, hand and foot, is exceptional for a Middleweight. I don't think any other Middleweight in history had better footwork than Nunn, and that's including Roy Jones. I had Nunn winning every minute of every round, jumping in and oiut of range, throwing combination's which were bouncing off the head of tate. Late on, Nunn threw a picture perfect body shot which badly hurt Tate, who only barely managed to get to his feet by the count of 9. Next round, Nunn would pile it on and stop the defenselessly Tate - Mills Lane was left no choice but to stop it. A sublime performance by a terrific fighter who, forever reason, did not fulfill his potential. Anyone else seen this masterclass?
Jaw dropping performance. Nunn could honestly do almost everything, his physical talent was on par with Roy Jones. Power? Go see him knock Roldan down with a hook while going backwards. Shades of Robinson. Single shot, devastating power? Kalambay. A masterclass boxing performance? Tate. Some of the best bodywork you'll ever see at SMW? Crawford Ashley.
It 'twas an awesome display of boxing by Nunn in '88................. BUT! I gotta also add that Tate was a limp dick at 160 pounds in '88............ Tate really strained to make weight............ Tate was there for the million dollar payday......... Nunn beat the **** outta a drained man............ Word....... MR.BILL
I was just watching some of my old fights with Nunn............. By 1990, Nunn was lazy and stinky in winning bouts against welters "Starling & Curry" on cable TV... YES! Curry was stopped, but it took damn near 10 rds to do so by Nunn in '90........ Nunn began his slide after his TKO over Curry in Europe.............. James Toney saw to that in '91........ MR.BILL
In fairness, Curry did well to make McCullum look bad too. Nunn was beating Toney going into round 11.
Thats one of the best performances ive seen from any fighter, Im not sure anyone could have beat Nunn that night.
For whatever reason the Kalambay KO seemed to start somewhat of a downhill slide for Nunn. His performances against Barkley as well as Curry and Starling were very uninspiring as you said. He then looked the best he had looked in a while against Toney in a losing effort.
