1952, past his best, a bit overweight. Robinson takes on Bob Foster.

Foster, primed and very tall, kills him in the second round.

    How likely is this?

Obviously I'm trying to find a Hearns-Duran parallel.

Not impossible. The size difference (in terms of natural weight) was bigger between Foster and Robinson than between Duran and Hearns, though.

I think the Robinson of 1952 had enough chin and skill to avoid KO by Foster. It's hard to say for sure, though. Foster was murderous at that weight, and his long heavy jab would have been very difficult for Robinson. The right would always be shortly behind.

But Robinson isn't as badly stylistically suited for Foster as Duran is for Hearns.

It's tough to imagine Robinson being knocked out cold because he never was but then again that's how Dick Tiger ended up and he was as tough as they come.

I believe Foster would find it more difficult to catch that Robinson however. He used a lot of movement against Maxim.

Bad match up for ray, bob foster was 6 foot 3 and punched like a mule, alot of people say even the great monzon didnt fancy his chances with foster, as the fight was spoke about more than once.

Yeah, I would say Robinson lasts until the fifth, longer than Duran. Not because of any gap in skill, but a difference in methods. As was said, Robinson would move a bit, and with his height, be picked off less easily. But he would fare only slightly better and lose just as decisively. Foster TKO5.

I think Ray would manage to hold off the onslaught but in the end Foster gets through and stops him but Ray stays up around the 5th as you say Manassa

Robinson would last longer than Duran principly because he's not tailor made for Foster in the sense that he's not going to be as easy to hit as Roberto was for Hearns. Eventually though, Foster lands with the right hand and would put Ray in big trouble. I'd say he gets stopped within 6 rounds, but not within 2.

Ray weighed 157 1/2 lbs for Joey Maxim.

Foster would be at least at 180 lbs at fight time.

    Foster by TKO in 7.

Nobodies arguing whether a '52 version of Robinson would beat Foster. The idea was to speculate whether it could end up in a similarly destructive fashion as Hearns v Duran.

Okay. I just find it useless speculation.

All speculation is, at the crux of it, useless.

If it's fun and eventful, it has a use - an enjoyable pastime.

Still, not as useless as a poster's comments on that useless speculation

I have a tough time seeing SRR take the ten count ,which is illogical because everyone has a chin,as Jumbo, my bareknuckle brawling mate allways tells me.
Ray did not have an impregnable defence he said" I could slip more punches but it bores me", one wonders if his attitude would have changed if he could have forseen his later health problems?

Foster ,undoubtedly had the pop to acheive a stoppage over Ray, I think he had more one punch power than Moore. If you can allmost decapitate Tiger ,I guess you can stop any middle ,especially one past his best.

Maybe Ray ,having sampled a couple of "Beltin Bob's" best would adopt a mid range policy? I envisage him trying to do a Leonard to Hearns , lots of lateral movement ,and quick in and outs, maybe a mid rounds tko. Then again Ray hit appreciably harder than Leonard, but he would be up against a lhvy, not a string bean welter

Foster was a stalker ,who liked to plant his feet,Ray would not be there to take more than one shot at a time.Foster's jab woud be a potent weapon, it came up from the hip ,was quick , accurate, and constant.

Gainford stated that Ray had problems with tall guys , Ive never been able to put my finger on this ,probably my powers of analysis are lacking?

Certainly Tommy Bell was awkward for him.Arguably you could say short guys like Basilio were too ,but he was 37 and on the way down by then.

Could Ray hit Foster hard enough to make him cautious?
Well, outside of class heavyweights ,who wobbled skinny Bob?

I am just posting this as it occurs to me ,which is probably very apparent.
Answer ? No, Foster does not do a Hearns on Ray, I renege on my first thoughts , Ray takes a hiding but sees it through.
There was a famous quote about some one who was much beloved,to my shame I can't remember to whom it referred , but the gist is
"******* died today, but I don't have to beleive it if I dont want to".
Those are pretty much my sentiments about this.
W .C. Heinz ,a truly great boxing writer once said ,"when my children, and grand children , laugh at the movies ,that once moved me,when they poke fun at the music I danced, and made love to .
I will have Ray Robinson in reserve, he is my ace in the hole"
I am misquoting him ,but maybe you get what I mean?
