From what I've heard one of his brothers is a southpaw and he was the one he started teaching him boxing originally so had him fight southpaw too. Don't hold me to that though, it's just what I've heard. I think the reason he paws with his jab is that he doesn't want to push fighters back with it, he wants them to come forward into the straight left and right hook. However I'd much rather he put the force behind it he's well capable of.
Sometimes it just happens. When I fluted about with boxing, or even when I still hit a bag, I box southpaw even though I am right handed. Theres no reason for it at all in some cases. There have been a few that have been taught to fight the 'opposite' way. Cotto is a southpaw who was taught to fight orthodox is he not. Its usually for a fighter who has two heavy hands to develop a bit of shock and awe by packing power in the 'wrong' hand Imitating a brother sounds as likely a reason as any
