I mentioned this in the "Is David Haye good or bad for Boxing thread" but this is a really important fight for Boxing. Haye is a charismatic, trash talker and he is exciting in the ring. Whether he can beat Valuev, or he Klitscos is another story but he is one thing that Value, Vlad, or Vitali will never be and that is marketable. David Haye could be on the nightime talk shows etc...............I know some people who love the sport of boxing will say this match is just for a lightly regarded alphabet title but this fight is so much more than the WBA Title it is a chance to have a current marketable charismatic Heavyweight Title holder.
Haye needs a KO in this fight to stir up interest in the HW division. A boring fight or a decision would be detrimental to his career. Boy needs a knockout.
Haye's footwork is pretty average as well though, and he's not a volume puncher like Chagaev, so I think he will struggle to win the fight that way. It literally all depends on Valuev's chin. If he takes Haye's shots it could be a Carl Thompson all over again.
Freddie is correct, Valuev will get flattened. Hopefully 1 of the klits fights him when he wins the title on saturday so he can attempt to unify the division.
A lot of people forget that Carl had been stopped five times going into that fight with Haye. Valuev has never been stopped, never been down, and it took a lot of lateral movement combined with activity/combination punching to beat him. Can Haye do all that?
I completely agree. Love him or hate him, I think you would be hard-pressed to come up with a rational argument that Haye isn't a very good thing for boxing. Charsimatic, funny, huge ko power, poor punch resistance (which only adds to the excitement) - he's good for boxing in and out of the ring.
Anyone using the Thompson fight as a yardstick for judging Haye is way way off the mark. It was Hayes 11th fight, he's just been bombing people out until that fight and he thought he could do the same to the legend that is Carl Thompson, but Haye just punched himself out by 'fighting like an idiot' (Haye's words not mine). Haye was a different fighter after that, alot more patient and precise. Haye's got lateral movement, he throws excellent combinations and his stamina is underrated, but that's not what's going to win him this fight. Speed and power will win the day
I have said this all along, I think Calzaghe would beat Valuev, Valuev likes to box at his own pace at a distance, if Calzaghe got in close and boxed non stop for 12 rounds Valuev would loose. I think Haye is a better boxer than Valuev but I think he is a little inexperienced and will take large risks that may end in him walking into a punch. But if I had to put a bet on, i would go for Haye, because Haye will go in and hurt Valuev early.
And even though Holyfield was 46, he was/is still more of a conventional boxer than Haye will ever be. He jabbed and moved, had that points win mentality. I may be underselling Haye, but does he ever throw a jab except as a range-finder? I just have serious doubts over Haye's ability to hold up past the midway point. He'll start getting sloppy and heavy-legged. He looks quite bulky, will this mean he slows down quicker? He'll need to get it done early.
Funny how it seems almost everyone is sure Haye will knock out Valuev who hasn't even been hurt so far, plus there a re several days left for Haye to **** his pants... I mean get injured...
