You know , i'm a huge fan of the guy. And mma isn't boxing so maybe this really shouldn't be that much of a problem but , but i still think it is.... Fedor , is as close to perfection as it comes in the world of fighting. Amazing balance (on the ground) amazing sub defense & offense amazing workrate amazing reflexes (especially for a guy of his size) amazing g&p (he reinvented it...) Add to that , his top endurance/stamina...his versatile gameplans...Like i said near perfect. BUT....but... He hasn't changed anything with his striking approach. Wild haymakers , some loopy punches here & there...And I ****ING HATE IT. To me that's a major problem.. a real weakness. HOWEVER , he's never been koed (yet)...has always been fast enough to put superior strikers on the ground first. ( Vs Semmy Schilt , Mirko)... I see a guy who's able to get away with a lot only because of his reaction/timing...his reflexes. But eventually , as the years go by , i think this problem will soon or later catch up...it will be his achilles heel. Can Rogers take advantage of this problem ?...(before the takedown)...Maybe , maybe not. But imo , he needs to fix this problem. Of course you guys will tell me "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...Yes, afterall , Fedor's been fighting this way for years..(and he's using his striking just to get closer to his opponent & continue with a takedown)...he's not a pro striker...just a sambo artist/judoka But personally...mma or not...if i'd be his coach , i would change this bad habit of his..
his striking was enough to beat everybody, so wtf are you talking about, it seems wide and not that good, but he is very accurate and has great power, thats enough to beat great strikers like cro cop hunt and schilt, and you are talking about rogers lmao
Yes , but pay more attention to what i'm saying...I KNOW. So far so good...Until...someone will finally be abl to take advantage of this problem. As emelianenko gets older...his reflexes won't be enough to always save his ass imo. Also , i'm not saying Rogers is the chosen one...that he will take advantage of this..i'm just asking..can he do it ? I don't know. Ok , probably not. But let's not forget what happened against Fujita. And let's not forget that no one gave that guy a chance in hell against Arlovski. (of course, Fedor's style has nothing in common with arlovski's...) but still , it's hard to be shocked or surprised in this sport anymore. (Serra wasn't supposed to be able to own GSP...then it happened.) I just personally think it's a huge hole in fedor's style. (otherwise perfect fighting style).
Or fedor sub1....(the ref doesn't separate fighters during the clinch)...and prime tyson was always forced to be in the clinch even against monumental bums.. And btw , why tyson ? Why not Lennox KO1 or Vitali KO1 ?... In mma there's no secrets , the takedown is the key in 90% of all fights. If the MMA opponent is dumb enough to confront the top striker..(trying to beat him at his own game)...that's when he's risking big.
I agree. Wild swings are still wild swings in an MMA match. The AA fight really showed Fedor at his most vulnerable imo; a big athletic guy with good takedown defense and better striking will beat him. If his jaw wasn't glass AA was on the way to winning that fight. However Rogers will struggle to stop being taken down.
It was a bit of a problem against Arlovski. (one of the rare guy in mma who throws punches like a boxer would )... But i kinda disagree. I don't think he was on his way to winning that fight. I've rewatched that fight a bunch of times , and each time fedor seemed like he was getting hit...he was in fact , rolling with the punches , taking little to no dammage. Here again....surprisingly good reflexes...But he needs to change this because he'll eventually get slower in a few years. and even if he doesn't. he leaves himself too open to strikes...In other words , it's a needless risk.
Nice post Boxingcar. I agree. Fedor is as close to perfection as it gets. His striking style is Combat Sambo based, it's unique and seems unorthodox. The effectiveness of his striking is incredible, either standing or from the guard. I read he was basically self-taught in boxing. He would practice with punch bags or sparring partners, he developed his own technique. Fedor's a very intelligent fighter, he's constantly looking for new ways to improve and evolve. All the points you raise i'm sure are worked on. Not sure how much of that was relevant to your post. Just my thoughts. Here's a good article with Fedor's striking trainer. http://www.sherdog.com/news/interviews/Devils-in-the-Details-Says-Fedors-Striking-Trainer-8331 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaONQEYYXx8&feature=player_embedded[/ame]
People bringing up the Fedor/Arlovski fight is silly. First of all, AA wasn't landing anything significant he was just backing Fedor up. We don't know if this was Fedor's gameplan.....which it probably was. The most logical explanation is that Fedor wanted to bait Arlovski ealry on and he did....and then he knocked him out. Fedor's striking looks wild and un artistic but he has never been schooled on his feet. GSP's striking is beautiful, looks great, very dynamic yet he was ineffective with it in the first fight against Penn and got clipped and stopped against Serra. Different things work for different fighters. Fedor's striking is outstanding. The guy one punch KO'd AA and got the better of Prime Cro Cop standing, also took out Sylvia in like 4 seconds standing...on and on
yeah are right, but the thing is that fedor doesn't get slower and the fight against fujita, fedor was to open because he never thaught that fujita can strike like that, before the fight everyone said that fujita can only wrestle. and fedor can't get beaten. i know that sounds stupid, but i think that there will be no one who will ever beat fedor, the only possibility is when fedor fights too long, he has 2 more good years. but after then he should retire
i agree with alot of this, fedors striking isnt the best..but its effective,i see him retiring before he gets slower
I can see fedor losing to Bret. This is like When George foreman came into the boxing scene and knocked out Joe frazier in brutal fashion. mma unlike boxing, isn't an exact science yet. No one is invincible and Bret Rogers has the niche fighter mentality. "Power in the hands and defense in the grappling" that style alone is a niche in mma that isn't utilize often. Cro Cop wasn't a sufficient puncher to put fedor away, but Grim has the dynamite. Will Fedor be able to diffuse it?/..
