Time will tell & I`ll be happy to join the hate squad if we dont get those ****in fights.... but Id rather wait & see what develops 1st.... anyone with a decent boxing brain knows that Floyd will box the ass off all those 2 guys anyway, it would still be nice to see tho.
I wont argue there, he will always be greater to me too but thats favouritism & Mayweather was/is the superior boxer.
I thought I knew that Oscar would kill Pacquiao, but I was wrong. I also thought Barrera would decimate little Pacquiao in 2003, again, I was wrong. How long are you willing to wait for Floyd to grow a pair?
He`s 32 so he doesnt/shouldnt have long left. As I said, boxing fans are the most ****ed up ****s on the planet, they are never happy, whatever will be will be with Mayweather.... as a fan of big fights, I hope we get to see these fights very much but Im done with worrying we will not see them, lets just wait n see. He will deserve all the flack in the world if he doesnt take these fights... he will deserve all the praise if he does take them... as a fan, I hope for the latter.
It's the name the man himself insists on these days, not my choice!! The thread asked for a top 20 list, and you posted a top 20 list in order. You shouldn't have bothered if you were then going to refuse to commit to your big calls when questioned.
If Floyd had already fought a few of Tszyu, Mosley, Williams, Cotto and Margarito, then the attitude I and many others share would not exist. He would either be revered as an elite boxer already (if he had beaten the best available) or he would be rated less but respected more (if he had lost one or two, but had actually fought the best available). If and when he does this, attitudes will change. Right now, the accusations I and others level at him are true. However, if you check my post on this thread to Addie, you will see that I do not believe he is as great in terms of ability as you and many others think anyway. Check the post. A 'Pretty Boy' win over Mosley is not a foregone conclusion at 147.
At 130, Mayweather was a great fighter. Not Whitaker great, not Leonard great, but undeniably great. I still cannot understand what he has shown you at 147 to suggest he is a great fighter there. He is not a great welterweight. Great welterweights don't throw one punch at a time.
Ok so here is my list after your input and deliberation. I'll get crucified for having Langford that low and Ali that high but i dont believe weight hoppers should get bonus points and heavyweights shouldnt be penalised for being heavyweights 1. Sugar Ray Robinson 2. Henry Armstrong 3. Harry Greb 4. Muhammad Ali 5. Roberto Duran 6. Benny Leonard 7. Langford 8. Ezzard Charles 9. Joe Louis 10. Willie Pep 11. Archie Moore 12. Carlos Monzon 13. Barbados Joe Walcott 14. Marvin Hagler 15. Bob Fitzimmons 16. Alexis Arguello 17. Pernell whitaker 18. Tony Canzoneri 19. Sugar Ray Leonard 20. Julio Cesar Chavez
Muhammad Ali is justified in my judgment. He practically cleared out really good divisions on three separate occasions, and his top tier wins are stupidly good. Frazier x2, Foreman, Liston x2, Norton x2, Shavers, Lyle, Quarry x2....stupidly good resume. Now, Leonard being that low...that's silly.
Nobody says he is not gifted! Itś a bit like with the egg of Columbus. Do you know this story? Well, here it is anyway: After Columbus had discovered America there was a big party at Queen Isabellaś palace to honor him. They drank and partied all night. At the end a noble said: "well, letś be real that wasn't anything special you did. I could have done the same. Just sail west until there's some land." Columbus looked at him, than went to him, gave him an egg and told him to place it on itś head so that it won't fall over. The noble tried but wasn able to do so. After a while Columbus took the egg away of him and pushed it head down jus hard enough on the table that it wouldn't fall over. The noble shouted: "I could have done the same!" Columbus just replied: "You could have done the same but I did it." The same with Mayweather. He could have beaten all of them from Tszyu to Mosley, Cotto and so on. He has all the talent. But fact is: he didn't. Others did. And that's why those are Top20/30 atgs and Mayweather is not.
I also agree. This is the bottom line when it comes to p4p discussions involving Floyd. However, I would reiterate again and will be happy to explain again for anyone who questions it: I do not think Mayweather has the skills of history's elite. He is not on the SRR-SRL-Whitaker-Duran-Pep-etc level, no.
As soon as I have time, I plan to write a lengthy and detailed explanatory thread on this opinion. I won't go into it now as I am rather looking forward to getting it all out in a proper format, but the second Castillo fight and Floyd's 130+ pot-shotting are two of the few key reasons why I strongly believe what I said in my previous post. :good And to be honest, I wouldn't even stop at saying he wasn't on the level of the true elite, some of whom I named in that post. Has Mayweather proved in his career to have better ability than countless skilled ATGs like Napoles, Olivares, Sanchez, etc etc?
Definitely not a Napoles. The 130 pound version was the closest thing to complete we saw of Floyd, but even then he had his limitations in terms of the style he used. Ones that would've been made a lot more clear against top flight opposition that he didn't hold every advantage against stylistically (like Corrales). I'd put Floyd about third tier as far as pure skill-set goes in the heart of his prime during his 130 pound days. I consider him a very, very good fighter at the higher weights, but not a special one. Not an all time great fighter by any means above that weight in my honest opinion.
