Hey could you explain to me how the betting works with the + and -?? b/c I'd like to bet a little money but I'd rather set up my own account than use my friend's betting account. So If I bet 100 bucks on Valuev and he wins I get my money back and what else?

Valuev isn't that great as a fighter, but Haye has a horrible chin. If you wanna take a chance, it might be worth it.

You bet 100 on Valuev you win 175 because he's +175.

I might bet on Valuev to win by stoppage and also to win on points, gotta be worth it. Knowing my luck Haye will go on and get a ****ing fantastic ko win.

No disrespect to Haye fans, but these odds have almost nothing to do with him. Valuev is an underdog, as he should be, because he looked like crap in this last 3-4 fights, especially the Holyfield fiasco. So, if he were fighting any number of contenders: Povetkin, Chambers, even Arreoloa, he'd likely be an underdog.

Valuev sucks ass. He would have lost the rematch to Ruslan in a lopsided decision if he had gone forward with it.

Yeah. Kinda. You actually win (profit) $75, with your $100 investment returned intact.

Basically odds of this type ("American" style) should be looked at as having a "base" of 100 (this symbolizes your investment). When looking at underdog odds (these will almost always have a plus sign: +) you simply subtract 100 to see how much you stand to profit on a win. In this case 175 - 100 = 75. So for every 100 (base) you put down, you get 75. If you bet 200 and win, you'll get your 200 back and profit an additional 150. If you only bet 10 and win, you'll get your ten back and profit seven dollars and fifty cents (total payout $17.50). Obviously if you lose, your invested base as bettor now belongs to the gamester.

Inversely, when looking at the "favorite" (nearly always preceded by a minus sign: -) you should look at it as how much you need to invest to profit the base. In other words, Haye is -215. That means to profit base (remember, base is always $100) you need to invest $215. So to keep it simple let's say you do just that - invest $215. You win, you get $315 (your investment + the base profit). If you invest double that line, or $430, and win you'll profit double the base ($200) and be paid out $630 altogether.

Favorites, clearly, are the riskier and less lucrative bet. If you're shaky at all on a favorite's chances and/or the negative number of the line is very large, the wise move is typically to leave it alone. The closer to zero a favorite is, the better the risk/reward ratio gets. Inversely, the higher a positive line is for an underdog, the more you logically stand to gain. However, if an underdog has a massive positive line it's probably for a reason, and you don't necessarily want to **** your cash away on a total longshot - the oddsmakers put in a good deal of effort determining these lines based on their research and expertise.

In this instance, I'm feeling a bit cocky in that my instincts strongly lean towards the positive lines provided by the oddsmakers. If you feel you know something they don't it's worth taking a calculated risk.

Go with your gut (but keep your head), and have fun. Good luck. :good

I was researching the odds on this fight and went to about a dozen betting sites. I read just about all the prognosticators comments on this fight and they're all recommending picking Haye. Some of them are practically gushing over him.

A bet on Valuev is becoming very tempting.

I would bet Valuev and the Under.

    Both could return great profits.

    Hate the American odds system.

Anyway, Valuev is a good price. He was even better a few weeks ago. Some money must have gone on him.

Exactly. Throwing a Benji or two on each seems more than worth it. Nik would really have to empty his enormous bowels and crap the entire king-size bed to not stop this chinny little man, IMO. :good

I think it's just a matter of what you're used to.

I became familiar with Fractional aka UK odds from doing vbookie. I'm equally comfortable with American or Decimal/European though. All make sense in a way. It's just conversion that can be a ***** (if you try to do it in your head). :yep

Does anybody from the U.S. here to their betting online? I was going to do my first bet online but I've been reading that because of some Federal Act you can't deposit or withdraw any funds. Does anybody know any truth to this?
