I don't feel too sorry for Valuev. He got a gift against Holyfield and it's good to get rid of him. He's a boring stiff, especially at this age. Still, Haye didn't do crap in the fight. And now you can envision him getting a Ruiz-like run of chumps to sustain his "championship" status. Haye didn't deserve to win the fight. This reminds me of Taylor-Hopkins: The promoters want the marketable guy and not the old, more boring fighter who isn't a good draw. The scores were a joke except for the draw card, and that still was off, IMO. At least Haye stunned Valuev at the end. Perhaps Dave can hang around a little longer at HW than I thought. He probably can, especially if he gets the "Bum-Of-The-Month" diet that's likely. * * * Dawson-Johnson II sucked. Not a surprise, but it was as bad as many thought it was going to be. 40+ year old guy fights 28 year old, and we see the result. Lampley can try to put over Johnson by bringing up Calzaghe, but the bottom line is that Johnson looked like just another geriatric Tarver who shouldn't be in the ring with a young fighter. * * * Now, it's one thing if you have a bunch of crud fights and there's no competition. However, on CBS tonight is a free MMA show with the biggest name in the sport among real fight fans (I won't give away what happened here for the West Coast people). The bouts are free, they have way more action than the two boxing matches tonight and that's how you end up losing fans. Again, you can get away with this if there's no competition. But when you're trying to keep or gain fans, nights like tonight hurt. Dawson wastes another date and Haye gains almost zero legitimacy from his "win." Weak.
Yep. Don't tell people about the Fedor fight yet, though. It's still to come for the West Coast in the USA. Don't want to spoil it.
Angulo-Yorgey was the fight of the night, followed by Emelianenko-Rogers. Granted, I didn't catch the whole Strikeforce card but by accounts Mayhem vs. Shields (which had promise) kind of sucked.
MMA has the style to appeal to the masses, plain and simple... even if it looks like two dudes butt****ing on the ground. Boxing is becoming more and more of a niche sport... especially with all the BS that goes on.
it's dying because it's not on free to air TV. You have to take a subscription out and then pay per views for big fights - there simply is little opportunity for new fans to get exposed to it as a major sport.
Shhh...Fedor fight is yet to come on the West Coast. I missed Angulo-Yorgey. Will have to catch that. Mayhem/Shields = boring.
Yep. You at least have to build guys up on free TV, and boxing hardly does that anymore. Fights like Adamek-Cunningham (not totally "free," but on basic cable) are too rare. Meanwhile, MMA is on network TV and you have two stinker main events in boxing tonight. I love both sports, but felt disappointed with boxing tonight. Still, good fights on the horizon (Pac-Cotto, Ward-Kessler).
I won't mention the fedor fight but everything leading up to it was a ****ing snoooze fest. I would take Haye-valuev anyday over that crap :bbb :bbb
The angulo Ko was devastating, defintely watch for it. I always enjoy a nice virtuoso performance and Chad put one on tonight. I know people wanna see people stand there and trade, but not me i really appreciate defense and movement. I didnt find the dawson fight boring at all, just one sided, but that didnt stop Coffe from coming forward.
Ha ha -- I wouldn't go that far! Sokodjou (sp?) and Mousai was fun. That was a good scrap. Same with Silva-Werdum. Miller-Shields sucked. No doubt about that. Fedor: Will talk about that fight in like 25 minutes or so when it's over on the west coast.
Enough boxing is dying please. I didn't know Dana White posts here. Lets not forget Cotto Pacquiao next week.
