Yea, because Haye is known for stamina right? Valuev fights at a snail's pace and it wasn't like Haye was throwing many punches. How do you know what's most effective for boxers, are you a boxer? When I run, I don't just jog, but change my pace, go up and down hills, run backwards and side to side, and throw punches. Running is very important if you want to become a complete boxer, and it's one of the best things you can do for stamina.
Calzaghe Bugger if anyone called him throwback. Speaking of which - doesn't Joe get his stamina from long runs in the hills?
fartlek is good for boxing, example a 30-40 minutes session, mixinig the pace of your running, from full sprinting to walking.
possibly, i saw a video and he had a punch coutner above a bag fixed to wall, and after so many rounds, he'd thrown a collosal amount of punches, like mayweather he has his cutman on the lynx clickers and throws thousands of punches a day, even if everything is put into every punch i suppose its conditioning the body to what boxing requires, throwing punches btw im not disagreeing with you just adding to your point!
I'm a boxing coach. And I didn't say boxers shouldn't run, I said they shouldn't bother jogging endless miles at the same pace which is nothing like the requirements in an actual fight. Boxing is just about the only remaining sport whose training methods haven't moved with the times but are stubbornly stuck in the past eg jogging for miles and skipping, both of which are pretty much a waste of time which could be much more productively doing something else
no hes not known for stamina but his legs held up pretty well last night and he did a fair amount of moving.
Correct. Sprints and interval training replicate an actual fight far more than mindless running for 6miles at some daft time in the morningatsch
i was told the reason its done in the morning is becuase if you wake up early your metabolism is quicker throughtout the day, which in term helps you keep your weight down!
Boxing is basically an endurance sport, and most fighters of the past were known for their stamina. Even in the 80's, fighters had to be able to do 15 rounds. I see a lot of fighters these days with stamina issues, even though 15 round fights are gone. Some of the so called "old school techiniques" are the core of endurance training, and have been used effectively for as long as boxing has existed. I'm all for trying new techniques, but why change something that has been proven effective for a long time?
LoL at everyone saying jogging doesn't do anything. Go tell that to Rocky Marciano who probably had the best stamina of any Heavyweight of the last 100 years. Non-stopping punching machine that kicked up running around 15 miles a day toward his incoming fights. Haye in his modern ways doesn't even keep his hands low but puts them up on the ropes when in the corner. This makes the heart do much more work in pumping blood and makes you more tiresome. He doesn't even know common thing in boxing. It's obvious if Haye doesn't do roadwork and just does sprint intervals he's being lazy. And if that's the case, I'm disappointed in the guy. Holyfield had questionable stamina too and hated doing road work. Steward commented on this on a Lewis vs Holyfield documentary. Bringing up Holyfield as your best source to why it's better is never the best thing to do.
