I did a similar thread on Kalambay some time back. Just been watching Barrera school Hamed like a whippet (it never gets old) so I'm applying the same question to him. He's one of my favourites despite the occasional Chavezesque lack of class, but I'll grudgingly acknowledge that he could be beaten by a certain type of good to great fighter. Anyways, enough rambling bollocks on my part.........Addie, you'd better chip in here for reasons not needed to be spoken ;)

That's all well and fine chum but it wasn't what I asked. And Chavez wasn't a featherweight.

Barrera would be too fast for Marquez. At 135 I would favor JC Chavez.

I reckon Barrera could take Baby Arizmendi, Chalky Wright and Benny Bass. Those kind of level fighters. But if he was in their day, fighting in rougher times, he'd drop a decision in every other fight against them.

Just to clarify, the title says featherweights.

    Eusebio Pedroza :)

I know, but not really at world level. I'm talking world champions who earned their bread and butter at the weight.

Fair shout, especially concerning the rough old days. Fellows like Arizmendi and Bass were bruisers in their element from what I can make out; I can imagine Barrera taking fights from them but knowing about it afterwards.

Danny "Little Red" Lopez could hit like a jackhammer but he seems very flat footed at times, and not very mobile. I don't think he'd be able to close the distance and get off first effectively, so I just favor Marco to work his left hook overtime, and stick the jab out there whenever in doubt. Over 12 rounds or 15 rounds, Marco is just too quick, mobile, and smart for Danny in my opinion.

Juan Manuel Marquez struggled with Barrera when he was facing a 130lbs version that had abandoned a body attack, and couldn't maintain a good work rate for 12 rounds. Marquez is great at countering single shots, but Marco usually throws in combination and that would confuse Juan in my opinion. It'd be tight, but I have to give Marco the benefit of the doubt because of how close a past it Barrera came to a draw (on my card), and the level of opposition each fighter beat at 126lbs.

Sanchez and Nelson both beat him, and Saldivar and Pep I haven't seen enough off to gauge. It won't go down to well, but I think you need to earn Marco's respect with your power if you want to beat him. Pep can land a lot of shots, but do I think he can hurt Marco? Not really, and I feel Marco had enough ring craft, intelligence, speed, and variety in offense to cause even Pep, as great as Pep was, problems.

I think Pedroza beats him...more times then not.

I agree that he beats Marquez and Lopez primarily for the reasons stated and that he probably loses to Sanchez and perhaps Nelson, although he would go down fighting no doubt, perhaps maybe even being able to pull off an upset against Azumah. He generally does do better against boxer types who allow him to fight at his own pace, especially those without top level power. I can't, however, see this helping him to victory against Pep in any scenario: Willie is just too good all round and could really punch when the mood took him. Barrera makes a good fight of it but ultimately loses a decision.

And I think that Saldivar is a bad matchup for him, probably second only to someone like Saddler. Power and bullet-like speed in both hands combined with sharp, intelligent aggression and relentless stamina. Like Pacquiao on acid.

Yeah, quite possibly. I can't make up my mind on this one with any real conviction. You'd have to favour Pedroza of course. He was a typically excellent Panamanian stylist and a dirty ******* to boot. I like Barrera's chances here though rather than against Saddler, Pep, Saldivar or Sanchez.

I can honestly see him beating most FWs in history, the best - I could see him outboxing Nelson in tough tough fight, I see him edging Saldivar (I see these 2 as very similar), he'd beat JMM prime for prime (I had him beating him anyway way past prime),
