He backs up just enough to keep square. It isn't a moonwalk. If Valuev didn't have the gumption (or physical ability) to bull-rush someone even smaller and less heavy-handed than Wlad, he's not going to do it here. He's a cautious plodder, and he'll cautiously plod into jabs until a cut opens up. Nothing about his style will pressure Wlad or bring him out of his comfort zone.
That may be the most incorrect, ill-informed and ignorant assessment of any fighter that I've ever read on this site. You might try actually watching a Wlad fight. Thanks for playing.
While Klitschko is more muscular than Valuev, I don't think that he is stronger. I think that Valuev has more natural strength and along with his size is the stronger fighter. However Klitschko is the better puncher. You said Holyfield was able to cause damage by crowding Valuev, but Klitschko is not this type of a fighter. He is a guy that fights from the outside. Valuev is also not being given enough credit for his boxing abilities because while he is slower, and doesn't hit as hard as Klitschko, they have very similar boxing styles. They stand very straight up and use their height and awkwardness as their defense. They both lack above the waist mobility. And while Wlad has better footwork than Valuev, his ability to move his head and dodge punches is questionable.
What a joke! Valuev is one of the worst champs in history! Wlad would KO him absolutely no doubt about it!
Hmm...an old McCline was looking good against Valuev before his knee gave out, Wlad annihilated a young McCline. Chagaev beat Valuev handily, he didn't land a meaningful punch on Wlad. Wlad's best performances came against tall and short fighters, Mercer, McCline, Austin, Byrd, Chagaev. He had a height advantage sometimes and sometimes not, he still beat them all in dominant fashion with speed, accuracy, footwork, power. Wlad was beaten twice from gassing out and once by Sanders, who was a quick southpaw with KO power, nothing that Valuev could copy. Valuev was beaten by decent fighters just because they were overall better boxers. To beat the current version of Wlad would take some very special attributes, to beat Valuev it's enough to be a good B - level fighter.
People are looking at Wlad and how he is superior in many ways, but they're not breaking it down to styles. And that's what is important in this fight.
McCline's knee gave out in what? The 3rd round? That's hardly an indication of how the fight was going since Valuev isn't one hitter quitter and McCline is a much different fighter than Klitschko. A bad example all together. Chagaev beat Valuev by evading his jab with headmovement and getting inside and firing combinations. When does Wlad do this and against whom?
Styles are only meaningful if there is a somewhat comparable level of ability. Wlad's weakness is his chin and Valuev doesn't have the power or handspeed to exploit it. Every other departement is in Wlad's favor by a huge margin. Wlad has shown that he can dominate fighters of his own size and Valuev is not good at using his size.
You don't think Wlad could train and adapt his style for the lumbering Valuev? Chagaev never fought a 7 footer before, prepared right and delivered. Wlad is superior to Chagaev in every departement and he couldn't come up with enough movement to avoid Valuev's slow punches?
I think Valuev uses his size well. If he would have rushed in on Haye, he would have easily allowed Haye to get inside, underneath his punches and land more combinations while simeltaneously wasting energy and making himself tired. Against guys like Chagaev, when they slip the jab, which they should considering they are MUCH shorter than Valuev, (Klitschko is not), Valuev couldn't do much but hold much like Wlad does when his opponents get inside. Klitschko is at a disadvantge here though because his height actually hinders him. Where Haye can move his upper body very well to avoid the jab despite his height, and guys like Chagaev and Holy who are already "decent" at moving their heads because they are used to fighting bigger men are shorter than Valuev by a wide margin, Klitschko who DOES NOT have good above the waist mobility will find it VERY HARD to get out the way of Valuev's longer jab.
But Chagaev is consistantly in the ring with taller men. The only adjustment he had to make with Valuev is punching even higher. Klistchko never had to punch up to hit anyone. Combine that with Klitschko's lack of above the waist mobility and we got problems.
