What happened to Thompson? He fought once in Germany after the Klitschko fight. Nothing else since? It is too bad because he is a good fighter.
It was competitive while it lasted but most rounds were for Wladimir. Thompson had Wladimir doing the mistakes any southpaw would dream of but never took advantage of ANY. Even his trainer told him throw the straight left blinding and it WILL land but he never did enough. Wladimir was more active and Thompson was clearly looking to save energy and not run out of gas. Wladimir was dominating the fight but was in danger a few times or looked like it.
This fight is an example of how awful this division is. Thompson is a very limited fighter. Slow, no power, inactive...Just decent defense and southpaw stance.
If he hasn't deteriorated since the Wlad fight, he could still beat a few names. Thing is, he was supposed to fight Toney, but that fell through due to Toney falling out with Goossen (at that time), and it costed Thompson (and Toney) half a year or so.
Boxrec's compubox punch stats looked like Thompson should've won every round. I never put much stock in Compubox since they usually score punches that don't even land or punches to the gloves. According to them Thompson outjabbed Wladimir & that's not the fight I saw.............:yep
Thompson is a good fighter, don't kid yourself. You don't outpoint Luan Krasniqi & KO him without being a good, busy fighter.
I was a great KO. It was a bit scary the way Wlad hit him & he put his arm up on his head like he was trying to stop his brain from coming outta his ear....................
Tony won maybe 2 rounds. He definitely gave Wlad a competitive fight. He hit Wlad much more cleanly than most opponents have, and Wlad had some trouble cracking Thompson even though he was throwing his whole arsenal that night. It's actually an underrated Wlad performance...in this fight, he looked a lot more like the old Wlad...lots of combinations, hooks, even a few uppercuts and bodyshots.
He definitely did show fatigue around the 5th round. I'm surprised most Wlad opponents don't take advantage of this, as I've noticed in several fights that Wlad tends to gas around the 5th-6th round and then gets his second wind.
This fight was in Germany right? Normally, those scorecards are worthless trash. Except in this case, the house fighter was able to handle things on his own merit.
