The Jorge Ahumada fight in '74. Imo,that was the best we ever saw of John. He never fulfilled his full potential. He was good enough. Just think how good he could have been.

He had quite a few, IMO. The Ahumada fight was probably the fight where he we truly saw what he was made of more than any other, though. I thought the first Finnegan fight was a boxing masterclass, as was his fight with Yaqui Lopez where he was essentially one-handed. And despite the fact that he was past his prime, his first fight with Saad showed him relive some of his better boxing moments prior to fading down the stretch.

You would find it tough to go wrong with anything pre-Parlov..
I didn't think finnegan won more than 2 or 3 rounds against him and maybe none clearly. The commentating, although good was far too generous to him.

Schmidtke just got slowly dismantled and almost certainly ruined as a fighter.

Ahumada was a terrific fight against an excellent, more experienced fighter who was favourite to win by many

Despite the last two rounds, Conteh's first fight with Saad was as good as you can be in a competitive fight, past prime, barely able to throw the right, against an ATG light-heavy :deal

Right, he went 15 tough rounds against a very tough opponent who had just been screwed out of the lightheavy title with that b.s. "draw" vs. Bob Foster. It was a significant quality win for Conteh and put him in the "15 round club" in the process.
