I have never thought of Cotto as a "counter puncher"

Am I on my own here? Lately I've been hearing alot about Cotto's counter punching, and to be completely honest and not embarassed to be told I'm wrong, this is new to me. Cotto's game to me is simple:

    1. feel opponent out, move and jab and look for combinations

    2. When he has trouble backing his opponent up, he backs up and looks to slip and move away (not slip and counter, or roll and counter)

    3. He was countering Margo at times, but he was also making him miss and moving away more often then not.

JMM is a true counter puncher. Floyd, Hopkins are true counter punchers.

Look at the Mosley fight he countered alot off of Mosleys double jab, he saw that Mosley uses it to messure his man, and took advantage of that movement...
Look at the Clottey fight, in spots you can see Miguel catch him during the exchanges...
he can counter punch very well....

Cotto is not PRIMARILY a counter puncher, but he is more than capable of counter punching. Here's an extreme example of what that means: Couterpuncher is one of the last words you would use to describe Pavlik, but in Pavlik/Taylor II KP countered JT's jab with right hands repeatedly. Just because a guy is not KNOWN for countering doesn't mean he can't do it.

I hear you, but he countered extremely well against Shane, and threw some great counter left hooks on Clottey. Also the KD jab wasn't a counter per se, but its timing was perfect.

In the Clottey fight, I didn't notice him trying to counter really.

Also, do you think he has the reflexes and speed to actually effectively counter Manny, or do you think he is going to have to be the one to push the action to win?

Cotto is primarily not a counter puncher, but he has incredible timing.

if you have good timing that means you can counter punch, I am sorry but the idea of counter punching is taking advantage of your opponent when he committs to something, timing is key in counter punching.....

but cotto's backpeddle is pretty good...it looks wiered being that almost every peekaboo fighter i know is a front foot fighter.

To sum it up: Alexis Arguello; not fast at all, but you better not make mistakes.

He did counter Clottey in the later rounds with his hook. Manny Steward compared it to how De La Hoya countered Quartey with his hook.

But anyway, Cotto was more of a boxer/puncher earlier in his career, and often played the role of counter puncher opposed to the aggressor he later became known as. Early fights like Maussa, Ceballos, Sosa, and Bailey are good examples of this. More recently the Mosley and Quintana fights come to mind.

There's a couple good examples of his countering in this GIF...

It's not so much a question of reflexes as of distance and control. Nobody would say that Marquez has better reflexes than Manny, but look at what he was able to do for long stretches of their two fights.

Cotto isn't as technically sound, but if he fights smart his size and power can play a role that Marquez's couldn't.

I am absolutely fascinated to see this thing play out.
