I knowits only a matter of opinion but how can some people say the mcGuigan would have been KOd when he'd never been KOd ever in his career?
Naz would knock out Barry in 8 rounds, but he might have to come from behind to do it,I think Barrys pressure would trouble Naz,but he would not be able to avoid Nazs awkward bombs coming in the way did. Barry was a pretty good fighter but i think he is overrated and very lucky to be in the HOF,he is not on Barreras level so anyone thinking he might do it because Barrera did it is sadly mistaken. Also the way Barrera boxed that night,Barry would not duplicate it.Thats not his style he wasnt as well rounded as Barrera. By the way Mcguigan was knocked out by Jim Mccdonnell and very lucky to last against Stevie Cruz. To say that Mcguigan would have been 50/50 against Nelson in 84/85 is crazy. Nelson was even better at feather than Jl and would have beat beat up Barry bad by mid rounds ko,and he wouldn't have to come from behind like Naz would.
Sorry my friend, but Jim mc donnell did not knockout McGuigan, didnt even put him down. The fight was stopped on cuts reopened from his previous fight (miranda i think). The Cruz fight was sheer exhaustion with the heat. Any doubts about that then check Sugar Ray Robinsons fight with Joey Maxim. Ray Millar had to replace the referee Ruby Goldstein and Robinson couldnt come out for the 15th round the heat was that bad. That fight was 10 degrees cooler than McGuigans, a countryboy fron ireland who hadnt seen a desert in his life. With respect, if you watched him fight Laporte, Pedroza and then Taylor you wouldnt be saying its crazy. In time Nelson proved himself a fantastic fighter and an A.T.G. but at that 12-18 months in 84/85 McGuigan was a hell of a fighter. Im not saying he would have beaten Nelson but it wuold have been a smashing scrap that could have went either way as there wasnt much between them AT THAT TIME. Just in case you think i have got the mcGuigan blinkers on, i havent. I've no great time for him to be honest, but i'll always defend his boxing ability. Regardless of that, name me 3 people that Hamed fought who were in the same league as those 3 men above? Anyone that Hamed fought with any discernable talent either knocked him down, repeatedly in some cases, or beat him. I can assure you that if a past-it Kevin Kelley can put him down thrice then what would McGuigan be capable of ? One things for certain, McGuigans a far bigger and better puncher than Kelley
Your clearly suffering from acute *******ation, I recommend a strong dose of reality to be administered around 2:30am GMT this Sunday.
Their styles abilities and the fights they had all indicate that Naz would have stopped Mcguigan. Hamed basically fought all the featherweights culminating with his defeat against the great Marco Antonio Barrera. He may have lost to Marquez maybe not. Had he continued fighting he would have faced him as well. I understand that McGuigan was very popular in certain circles(not mine by the way) however lets us just say politely that McGuigan was not a great champion which Naz arguably was. In a style matchup Nas speed, laterally movement and power would do for McGuigan and no honest and sincere appraisal can doubt this.
I recall hearing that Mcguigan was rocked on numerous occasions against Mccdonel. I am also aware of the Maxim/Robinson fight. You are correct when talking about the Cruz/Mcguigan fight, and i do recall all the Mcguigan fans making excuses about the heat. Didnt Cruz have to fight in the same conditions? So I guess since hes from Texas that doesnt count:think If thats the case well you can say Taylor and Laporte were jettlagged and werent at there best fighting in front of thousands of Mcguigan fanatics. Taylor was outboxing Mcguigan before the stoppage but You wont hear anyone making excuses for Taylor. Pedroza was far past his prime and Laporte was one of those incosistent fighters great one fight and uninspiring the next. Im not trying to bash on Mcguigan I think he was a very good fighter but I just dont think hed win this one,or against any other of the greats. Mcguigan could punch but hed usually get you by accumaltion, his power was about on par with kelley , Augie Sanchez punched harder than Barry too. Most of Naz's knockdowns were usually because of his awkward footwork and being caught off balance not because of his chin, but your right in that Barry probably would have dropped him and i think hed even get the best of Naz for most of the fight with his pressure, but Naz had great one punch power and i think eventually one of those bombs would have crushed Mcguigan. By the way I was never the biggest Naz fan i loved it when Barrera whupped him and usually rooted against him,but I also admired his ability to change a fight his way with one punch,he also had great natural ability and excellent speed.
Look, thats fair enough comment. We all have our opinions. My point with cruz was that he maybe would be a bit more accustomed to the heat being from texas. No excuses, cruz got the decision. although i had McGuigan by 1pt ha! Any other half-decent world champ, i could accept an argument for or against except that Hamed. I honestly think he was one of the most overrated guys id ever seen in a ring. But thats just my opinion
****ING TROLL!!!! Both very underated fighters here on esb and I honestly don't know who'd win. They'd also be very competitive Pac who seems more effective against the bigger, slower guys. Off topic really but I can see Nelson definately being a nightmare for Pac.
Further to my earlier post, i have been considering this match further and i still come down on Mcguigens side, my overiding thought is that i think its no coincidence that Naz always seemed to look least impressive against fighters who maintained pressure on him, he was not very impressive against the slow mathodical Cesar Soto, he was not very impressive against the light punching Wayne McCulloch and of course he was not very impressive against Paul Ingle - three pressure fighters and three poor performances, And Barry McGuigen was a much more Varied and Skilled Pressure Fighter than any of them, Coming in behind the Jab then before jinking to the body, Barry was Faster, Harder Hitting with better Structured attacking, and great Stamina then this aforemention trio If Styles make Fights i am drawn to the conclusion that Naz simply will not feel comfortable with Barry's Style wrapped in a 100mph 3 mins a round pace. And a further thought, considering the way MAB beat Naz with sound old fashioned fundermentals....i am even starting to wonder if Naz would have beaten Stevie Cruz himself ...Think about it on that night Stevie had excellant mobility, a good Jab, a g9ood countering right, grit determination and excellant stamina, A fast paced fighter like McGuigen might of been expected to wilt in that Heat...Would Naz have done better ? anyway another subject for another day, I still on second review feel Barry wins this one.
I think Cowdell would have a good chance of beating Naz as well, as long as he didn't lean into a huge uppercut with that semi-crouching stance of his.
The thing is I think he probably would though. I can see one of thse corkscrews busting right through his guard. He'd pick him off with loads of straight lefts and frustrate the hell out of Hamed before the end though.
