regardless of world titles. regardless of win, lose or draw. which aussie fought the best, the most often, since the war ? (1945) fenech fought the best in his division that i can remember, except possibly antonio essparagoza. however, blokes like ron richards, and even tony mudine, although never winning a world title, they fought many great fighters. they fought fighters that today would have more than one world title belt. so which are australias most credentialed fighters? fighters that had a go, fought them all, regardless of titles? .
Lovemore has fought some quality opposition....just hasn't defeated them. Shannon taylor is the same.
Off the top of my head and only factoring in fighters from the 80s who I've seen, Kostya was a stand out, fighting La Porte & Fuentes in his 4th & 6th fights was a sign of belief in their guy by Mordey. Following on was Bramble then Lopez than some very good opposition during his title reigns. Fenech got to a lot of guys before they eventually became champions, off the top of my head Richardson, Zaragoza & reigning champs such as Payakaroon and Callejas who moved up in weight for another title, and of course the legendary yet past his prime Zarate. Two fights I wish Jeff would have made were Esparragoza & Paez, recall reading an interview in KO or Ring where Jeff admitted he wanted to knock 'that bloody Paezs head off'.
Would certainly endorse Leon's choices of Kostya & Fenech. Would add Harding, who didn't hang around that long, but took on amongst others: Andries (x3), Vedder, McCallum (loss), Tiozzo etc. Lewis was also desperate to get La Londe in with Jeff, thinking it'd be a big payday and La Londe had run his race, but they just couldn't get it done.
If you talk of Quality of opposition..?? Ron Richards faught the best, the very best.. yet Ambrose belted him 4 times... Jack Carrol belted him twice.. Post WW2? Bobby Sinn, Elley Bennett, Lionel rose, Fammo, Tony Mundine, Hec Thompson, Craig Trotter, Troy waters... There's 50 names to mention.. all acomplished for their own reason.. None deserve lower status for achieving less than an IBF belt, a Commonwealth Title or an Interim Title.. Sam Soliman has fought some modern greats.. Rick Thornberry faced numerous also.. Plenty of others have made serious Champs look average in attempts to steal their throne.. Troy Waters for one! If you'd like to analize a career..... Two words.. TAKE A FKN GUESS!!!!
Generally, that's the thing that sets apart our former champs as compared to today's - with some exceptions of course.
